Take that away and gas is still about $3.50 a gallon, and then when an offshore rig goes down and the oil company doesn't have the money to fix it, the cost of gas goes up even more.

But we have some politicians who want to do exactly that - take away or heavily tax oil companies thin profit margin, which will be paid for by you and me.

I wish there was an easy answer to this, but there isn't. Some people blindly claim that the oil companies are gouging us, but they're not.

Compare their profit margin now compared to 10, 20 years ago.

I bet it's pretty close to 9% without even looking it up.

Profit is up because worldwide demand is up. They are selling more product, but they have to invest money to sell more product.

Some people see all those numbers and get dizzy.

The only way to ease the problem is to explore and drill domestically, so that money is going into our own economy, and not that of countries that may be funding organizations that are interested in seeing our demise.

Domestic exploration/drilling and Nuclear plants won't make us 100% energy independent, but it would be a step in the right direction and would also lower the cost and be a huge boost to our economy and tax base.

BTW, for those people who can't say "ANWR" without also using the word "pristine" I give you this picture and caption of ANWR:

Oil seeps to the surface of the tundra, evidence of what lies beneath. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates there could be between 3 billion and 12 billion barrels of economically recoverable oil.

And at the cost of exploiting and potentially destroying one of the last pristine wilderness areas in the world? I am no hippie but Alaska needs to be kept the way it is with very minimal human intervention. I would honestly rather pay higher prices for gas. I am also of the opinion that higher gas prices will eventually lead to better and better alternative fuel and green technologies. Just my opinion.

i feel for the people in Europe but then again most of the cost is from taxes on the gas rather than the cost of producing it.

I dont care if you have to drill though a baby seals head, go get that oil. I am all for keeping wilderness area's that way, but this is a resource that we need, the drilling will have an impact but it wont be long standing, 150 years tops, a blink of an eye in time.

You tree hugger's are the same ones who wont even let loggers cut dead trees out of over grown "protected" forest lands, where the density of trees is 10 times normal and then wonder why when lighting starts a fire it burns hotter than any other forest fire and cant be stopped.

            $3.49 for 87 here.

Its finally now more expensive for me to commute to school than to just live there. Good thing its happening now instead of sooner, because I am done in like 4 days ;)

Can't wait for next year where my only drive will be an 8 mile drive to school twice a day. A tank is gonna last me like a month lol

Same here. I either drive a 13 mpg Denali or a 18 mpg F250 daily... Either one, I just fill them up and keep on going and smile about it. Doesn't bother me one bit to use $200+ a week in gas to drive these vehicles.

Kind of funny, isn't it, the whole notion Henry Ford had that cars should be for the masses (as long as he made masses of money from it) and soon enough it will be once again that only the rich will be able to afford them.

So, now all the people who have bitched the last 40 years about how much we spend on public transportation just might need to eat their words, not to mention out 120 year-old railway system...there are tracks here in Oregon that are 60 (!) years behind in maintenance...

My big question is just WHAT am I gonna do for a living when all is said and done?

I'd like to get my 1600 to run on e85. I wouldn't trade it for an impala though.
