If Dell is crap then toshiba makes the worst friken POS in the world.

Every toshiba laptop I have used has had some cheap issue with it, mine not only overheated, but the cdrw drive died.

Toshiba's fix for overheating? downclocking the processor. Screw them,

Dell is fair, good support as they have on site, which I like, however they also have a cheap plastic feeling now.

Apple is fantastic in terms of build quality (talking powerbooks here) same with IBM

    Thinkpad or Powerbook

I've had the complete opposite experience from you, well sorta...

My toshiba laptops (ive gone through 3) has been excellent. I recently got a Toshiba laptop, and i have absolutely zero complaints. Design wise, I prefer most of the newer Toshiba to Dells as well.

Couple of my friends have a dell laptop, and they absolutely hate it, and regret buying it, but I have no say on this, as I have no personal experience behind their opinions.

IMO, whatever reputable laptop you buy these days, you can't really go wrong. Unless you are a hardcore gamer or photochopper or something, most laptop will keep people very satisfied.

        Depends.

The top of the line Tibooks (powerbooks) are generally pretty reliable and nice little machines. The lower-end i-books on the other hand are utter, utter crap. I have 5 friends that purchased these, and every one of them has had to send it back at least 3 times in under a year for warranty issues. This is not an exageration, the ibooks are garbage.

The $3k powerbooks on the other hand are generally nice.

I've got a Toshiba laptop.....Satellite series based on the M30 chassis. Intel P4 Centrino powered, 15.4" display, integrated wireless network connection, etc. Granted I've had this notebook just 7 months, but its been running flawlessly from day 1. I purchased it directly through Toshiba too.

I tend to turnover 'puter systems every 3-4 years so this one has lots of time to prove its worth. If it gives me troubles, my next system will be from someone else.

I was looking at a pretty decked out laptop to satsify my needs, but I hate using laptops for actual work. So.....

do you think buying the base Dell Laptop for Wifi use and shit, and then get a Desktop with the necessary hardware. From looking at pricing, I could probably get both for less than a deckout laptop.....plus the desktop could be upgraded in a couple years.
The current dell laptops have a cheap feel to me, not to say that they are crappy, which they are not, however my 8200 had a small flimsey feel to it, and I still use it without issue (using it right now)

If I were to buy another PC Based laptop, I may give dell a try, however I would strongly recomment IBM's Thinkpad, they seem to be a tad higher quality then dell.

In terms of laptop vs desktop. My laptop can do everything my desktop PC/Mac can, except heavy gaming. If you don't game that much, then you can save a ton of money on a laptop. Higher end laptops do come with much better GPU'S, such as the Mobility 9600/9700, however you will pay a premium for that. I don't recommend nvidia for gaming though, never liked anything they made.

If you don't game, grab a nice laptop, around 1300 bucks, will do MORE then what you can imagine, if you do game, spend a bit more. If you don't need heavy mobile power, get a desktop as well :)

Whats wrong with the ibook? My friend has had one for a year and it works great. I have used and it works great. My laptop doesn't need to be top of the line. I just need it for school things and playin MP3s. I'm not gonna be playin games on it or anything.

Since I'm not looking to play games and have the top of the line everything an ibook is fine? I thought you were saying less quality in an ibook not less performance.

Which part of "horrible reliability" and "major warranty issues" don't you get? These things are cut rate in every aspect. The touchpad seems to fail on almost every one of them I've seen. The CD roms have issues, and the screens seem to crap out with alarming regularity.

You already sound like you're sold on one though, so knock yourself out.

basically EVERYTHING is downgraded, not just performance, but quality also, i would strongly reccomend against an ibook, but do what you please.

I'm just deciding between spending the extra $$ to get a 12" Powerbook or to save a little and get a 14" ibook. Since the Powerbook sounds better I will prolly head that route. I am more or less sold on Apple vs. IBM instead of ibook vs. everything else.

i have the 12" powerbook, i was stuck where you are between the bigger cheaper ibook and this, but I couldnt be happier, its extremely portable and light, and just overall really cood.

Did you look at getting a non-Apple laptop or were you just deciding between ibook and Powerbook?

EDIT: Also, does the Powerbook come with the Bluetooth Technology? The ibook has the option of putting it inside, but I don't find that option with the Powerbook. Would I just have to get the external adapter?

                                Charlie, stop spreading misinformation.

The iBook line has since been revised twice since the warranty failures occured due to the logicboard problems of the previous iBook G3's. Moreover, the Tibook is no longer a tibook, and has not been for almost a 2 years since apple moved construction from Ti to Al.

                                :-D

However, if you want to play games, don't buy an iBook. Christ man, he is right when you are buying the bottom of the line consumer level laptop, because you are. if you want a gaming machine anyway, you shouldn't be looking at a mac. That's just rediculous.
