Off the top of my head - a saw tooth wave form should to the trick. That should approximate the diff's sensor well enough.

the tach signal comes from the VR sensor, not the diff ;)

+1 it should just be a 5v square wave.

Yeah I'm not sure what is going on with it. I feed it all the power it needs, and the tach does not read at all until I crank up the RPM's.
