When I was 16 I had those guys do that to me. Kind of crazy, I was stupid at the time and embarrassingly enough almost bought into it, as I was a big audio-geek.The vans full of speakers has resurfaced, get Luke.

I never bought any. Oddly enough they offered me 1400$ also. I was in the market for something along those lines, but only had about a 1k$ to spend.
Sneaky bastards. Just seems weird reading about it, and having it described exactly the way I experienced it. 2 guys, white van, and 1400$ speakers, weird..The Red Dragon V.5 1991 318iS / 2013 F800GT

The guy might have bought the speakers from the scammer, and is trying to use it as leverage in the purchase, doesn't sound like what the actual scammer would do.
They tried the white van thing on me, I don't remember how much exactly he offered to sell them for, but it got down to about 1/4 the initial price, people just don't do that when they are selling stuff...And he kept showing me all of these licenses and crap like I knew what they were...
Apparently this is actually legal though. They are legitimately selling the speakers, you could probably get them on false advertising or something though.sigpicComment

the old white van speaker scam.........
Those speakers are available for $100-150 shipped, and I'm not sure they're even worth that much. I'd reply to the douchebag and tell him you'll take his speakers as part trade for their true value and knock $150 off the asking price of the car, since that's what the speakers are REALLY worth.
Sounds like they're trying to make you think they are Klipsch speakers or some other high-end brand, but they're definitely not.Comment

That's the same brand I thought these sounded like. It's a shame that Klipsch is no longer in the high end echelon of the loudspeaker product range.- Trey

I would have said, "How about you give me $3300 for the car and then I will decide if I want the speakers."
The white van people tried to get me on that back in the late 80's. I asked them for a business card so I could call them later. They gave me a dirty look and drove off. I didn't find out it was a scam until a couple of years later.Comment

It happened to some people at work, and one of them was seriously considering buying them, they were thinking Klipsch, I told them it was a scam, but they simply would not believe me, so I had them look it up on wikipedia, that convinced them.sigpicComment

Best thing you can do for yourself is just say, "no thank you."
If you'd like to get involved, try what I did last summer when I was approached while filling up at a local gas station...
I knew it was a scam from way back when. Two dudes in a (red) van with a shocking overstock of speakers. The warehouse had been locked up for the week and "the boss" said just get rid of them for any price. What a deal! $1500 speakers for $250! No? How about $100? I politely declined saying they probably wouldn't phase match well with my Martin-Logans. Was I sure? These speakers have automatic matching to work with any system. Golly gee whiz! Really? Nah, I still have to pass. I don't have any room for new speakers and the neighbors are already ticked that my system is too loud. Thanks for the great offer, fellas. See ya.
Gas station sales not being their forte (I guess) they bebopped over to the Home Depot store at the end of the shopping center where I was gassing up. They parked like a vulture out past the edge of other cars and trucks parked and waited. I got an Icee and paid for my gas then called 411 to ask for the non-emergency number for the county cops. I don't want this shit going down in my neighborhood but I wasn't sure if it was a crime.
I got connected to a dispatcher whom listened to my story and assured me that uninvited sales from an unlicensed retail location was in fact a crime. A misdemeanor with a graduated series of warnings and fines, but a crime of harassment nonetheless. She'd be happy to have a trooper drop by... where are these guys now?
I sipped my Icee and waited about three minutes for two cruisers to appear. I would loved to have been a fly on the dashboard of that van. I saw some papers exchanged including several full size sheets from the cops to the crooks and then I watched both cruisers follow the van out of the parking lot. I kept my distance and sipped on the Icee while both cars tailed the van to the county line and then took a side road to turn around.
I should have called the troopers in the next county too.
