not every cheap e30 out there necessarily needs a rebuild or a swap.
i would advise you to sit tight and keep searching, rather than pulling the trigger on some $2000 e30 that actually requires involved maintenance to be daily roadworthy.

yeah im not a believer of modding engines...i just need to do more research on it, as in what type of tranny/clutch/etc. ill need and how much those will cost me extra.

Well if you play your cards right you can have a really fun DD that will get some great MPG. And after reading more, 19mpg is only really being seen by people with S series engines or M series with lots of S parts.

I have heard (not firsthand knowledge, but pure hearsay) than an M50 with a getrag 260 and a 3.73 will get 25 MPG driven "friskily".

That is my big plan, until I find out how to get gas for $2.00/gl again.

In the meantime, I found a decent '89 325i for my wife, to replace her POS 2003 Malibu. Got the car for $500, wheels, tires, general parts for about $800, spent about 60 hours on the damn thing.

                    She loves it.

I recently got back from utah driving my buddy's 94 325i-- vanos m50, 5 speed, no idea on diff. I was cruising between 80-90mph and averaged 32mpg from near lake powell to denver. The m50 is ridiculously fuel efficient for what it is.

You're trying to do it on a budget - that's fine and you can if you're patient. However, let me suggest that if you're thinking swap, don't waste time on an M50. For about the same or just a little more, you can get an M52 which is a much better engine. I saw ~30mpg on a long freeway trip recently - whenever I was able to keep my foot out of it that is ;)

I seem to find 325e's for sale a lot cheaper than the i's or even the 318's and if saving gas is one of your concerns then an eta engine would be a good idea for you. I have an 86 325es and I love the torque although I haven't driven an i and probably don't want to becasue then I will want a swap. My point= buy a 325e they are a dime a dozen and can usually find cheaper engine components.
