I unplugged the ICV and started the car just to see what would happen. It actually idled smoother so I drove the car for a couple minutes, idle did not stick to 4k rpm, but the idle eventually went lower and lower then the engine cut off. I plugged the ICV back in and the idle went back to "normal," but I don't think I have since driven it long enough to trigger the stuck idle problem again.

Is there any other way to test the ICV to determine if it is bad?

      Dude...

If the DME and the wiring is good...

      The ISCV is bad...

That is what they do when they are bad.

Get a known good one and swap it out. I had a few of those that I sold for $20 each.

Thanks, that's what I'm looking to do. You got any more?

Also check your motor mounts. Your engine might be flopping around unbeknownst to you and hanging up the throttle cable. probably unlikely given the CEL and shutdown thing, but never hurts to check. i mention this because it is a common problem with 02s (my baileywick) that have broken their DS mount. Engine moves over, pulling on throttle linkage, car revs out of control. anyway just a thought. :)

I will check it out, but I doubt it's the problem, because sometimes the high rev happens after the car sits idling normal for awhile on the driveway.

Another thing that happens is that sometimes when the car is sitting idle and I slam the door shut, the engine cuts off. Or when I slam the glove compartment door shut, the idle surges. Any thoughts?

Yes, it is under the dash above the glove compartment. I'm going to check the connections, too.

I've got an ICV. It was sold to me as good but I never did get a chance to put it on my car (ended up being a bad TPS). $15 shipped. PM me if you want it.

                          I have a 90 325is and requires the T-shape ICV. Is your ICV T-shaped?

could be the connex to the box or a component *inside* the box has come desoldered. possibly pull glove box and investermigate with small hammer/knuckles... ;)

Yes, please make sure it's not a sticking throttle cable before swapping the ICV. This is common on E30 M3's but not so much on 325's. It's still something to check for though.
