Not a prolbem - it's all carefully covered up with 3m undercoating now ... the gigantic head of the m30 blocks any sight of it anyways...

Regarding polution - Yea, I took the bus for a good long time - so I've paid my dues for keeping the enviroment clean...

Now someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the European countries in which most of their cars do NOT have catalytic converters on them yet ALL of ours are required to have them. Excluding the obvious older cars. People just bitch and moan too much these days. I mean do you guys really think it matters what ANYONE does to TRY and preserve the Earth? It's not like it can be stopped. It WILL happen eventually.

Crap! We either choke on pollution or get blow up next month by a super nova, there isn't any way to win.

Since the end of the 80's all new cars are required to have catalytic converters in western Europe, don't know about the eastern parts but I doubt manufacturers skip on that. I think there is some kind of international legislation on this. Somehow California is where most of this positive environmental development is happening, despite the rest of the US not giving a shit. I for one would love to have no petrol cars at all in city centers.
This doesn't prevent me from tinkering with petrol engines.. gotta love that.

A ban on all petrol cars/bikes within city limites??
I could see people burning that city to the ground.

There's no such thing as an "international" legislation on pollution controls. Europe adopted most of our standards from the late 70's thru the mid-80's only they took them to the extremes. The closest thing to "international" was the Kyoto Treaty and it would have held the US to even tighter standards while exempting all of the third world, including China, and they're the ones polluting to extremes right now. That's why our country "opted out" of it; it would have hurt our economy and country while others got off scott free. Now, I could argue this point 'til doomsday really comes (if the thread were to be severely hijacked! lol) but the last time I checked this was a thread on an M30 conversion, so this is me getting off my soapbox.

                  Correct,

The cars which are not fitted with a CAT in the uk face the same restrictions as the cars which have a CAT. My 318is is running cleaner than a CAR which is fitted with a CAT so its not all doom and gloom. I also think that cars should be baned from City centres, but at the same time better public transport systems should be in place.

All I'm saying is that the world WILL end. I mean it may be another 300 billion years from now, but it is still inevitable. I actually did not know that a lot of the European cars were having to use catalytic converters now.

Back on topic. About how much of the firewall needs to be massaged. I am also planning on doing this swap, but I believe I will also be adding a turbo later on.

With today's engine management systems a lot of new cars don't even need a cat. If you remember the Taurus SHO that had the engine made by Suzuki, I think (can't remember for sure), it ran so clean it didn't need the cat but to avoid hassles the factory put one on anyway. I'm betting that happens a lot today; they just put it on to keep from "fighing city hall".

How about when saab took a old saab 99 and ran the exhaust straight into the intake of a new saab. And then measured the poluitants going into the new saab and then another measurement of what came out of the new saab - it was cleaner - a LOT cleaner...

See - good running cars CLEAN the air!
