I've had a few random strangers, almost all well into middle age (40-50+) compliment me on my E30 as well. I've even had two homeless people begging for change on the side of an intersection give me a compliment.

I get compliments all the time, but only when I actually meet people, all my age, it's hard to sort out real compliments from people that don't understand and are trying to be nice. Don't get many random compliments though :( Aside from an occasional thumbs up. But then I always look pissed when I'm driving, so I doubt people think I'm someone who wants to talk.

You've got to be kidding, the E30 M3 is the only "real" M3 to start with. All the other ones were just glorified 3 series with some extra shiny shit so the guys with the little pricks would spend more money. (with the possible exception of the e46 m3.)

I got my car smogged at this tiny hole in the wall inspection only station this week and it was run by some East European guys. The tech didn't say a word the whole time and was one of those old school "look pissed" type of guys.

He came up to me after a while and asked about the motor:
"This good motor?"
Yeah, the M42 is a pretty good motor, easy to work on...
"This look strong, look like M3"
Yeah, it's similar in some ways, blah blah....
"You want sell car?"

So we ended up chatting for a bit about E30s and he started telling me about the 323s he'd see and how good BMW engines are etc. It was cool because i knew he was glad to see something other than your usual '84 Tercel and he probably grew up in Eastern Europe with the E30 BMW being the cool car 20 years ago.

When the euro e36 M3 came out 'enthusiasts' (probably e30 M3 owners at the time)
all hated it and asked BMW to badge it as a 330i and then go back and
make a real M3.

e30 M3 is the only 'real' M3, atleast its the only one that I'd buy.
