The BMW engineers didn't use zipties, and neither should you.
Good job on getting the real deal.Comment

If it's hit with enough force to shed from the clips, there will be enough force to break some zip ties.'89 325is S50 Track Montser

The idea is that the zip ties are loose, to catch it if it falls from the clips.

Yeah, I know. It won't work. If it's got enough energy to break free from (or just break) the clips there it will still have that energy when it hits the zip tie. And if a few of them do hold you'll end up dragging the lip and grinding it to a pulp. Clips and smart driving and you'll be A-OK! :D
And before you question my judgmental statements, remember I'm on IS lip #6. I know what works by now.'89 325is S50 Track Montser

Good god. Six?
You ought to get a fiberglass mold made of one and just start making them yourself.
Oh, and where did you get that gigantic splitter you have?

That would be a ryanG splitter.
Here you are my good sir.

And you're wrong. :p It's a custom piece (with undertray) made by 318isbmw. He makes normal splitters (not trayed and more conservatively sized) like RyanG's as well but with thicker material. Ryan's are great but having owned both I prefer the thicker one. That would be a ryanG splitter.

Thanks Brendan...
I agree with Fidhle, just run some clips on it, and go slow over speedbumps and be careful, and you'll be all good. Also, its easy to take off, so if you know your gonna be in an area where it could get ripped off, take it off. I don't run mine on roadtrips and stuff like that just to be careful. Be careful, and the IS is way way better than the Rieger's hard material. Its pliable and works great, long as your smart about it.

If that's your car in your sig, I don't see how you've managed to have so many lip-related problems.. . .

The pic britishbmw posted was the first incarnation of BMW318is's splitters on my car this past summer: 1.5" with full undertray. As you can see the lip had already been through a bit over the winter (with a RyanG attached) so downforce eventually owned it. The clips were overcome but I had the rear of the undertray bolted to my skidplate and I managed to escape with just having burned through the front edge of the splitter. I then bonded the RyanG to the bottom of that splitter giving me about a 2.5" splitter which actually had some noticeable downforce as speeds increased but that setup was short-lived as well. A pretty girl in the passenger seat inspired me to go much faster than was safe or prudent and the whole thing bit the dust this time, as the bolts had been replaced with zipties. My current setup is a 3" with undertray and is held in place with bolts, zipties and ACS-style splitter stays; it looks gay as fuck but it works and is solid! While parking last month I actually bumped a curb lightly and felt the car stop...
Here's the setup as it sits now, although most of the ice has melted:

More Here.
But back on topic, my lips have been owned by:
A thief, a tree, a porcupine, a huge frost heave, downforce and a mac truck. Before I started going all aero-crazy and installing goofy splitters I never had problems with roads and was just careful to keep a few extra clips on hand in case I hit something. The only catastrophic damage was done either significantly damaged the car as well (tree, porcupine) or had an added factor like splitters or zip ties.'89 325is S50 Track Montser

No worries, Brendan's lips are pretty new to the scene and a bit more expensive than Ryan's, but easily worth every penny! I doubt the 3" monster will go into regular production though...

That is what I want. That's functional even. As long as it doesn't rip off. I'll have to beg and kiss his ass for a while once I get the cash so he'll make me one.
