You just need to know how to drive in the winter. Hitting the brakes is your worst enemy. The only time I needed my 4x4 was to get out of snowbacks that maintenance plowed up next to my car when they plowed the parking lots. Just a little common sense and any car can make it through the winter, its just a totally different driving experience
I went to school in Oneonta last year in pretty much the exact center of NY. The winter sucked for driving. I was stuck on my ES100's until early December. I hit the ONE friggin patch of ice on an otherwise dry highway @ ~65 the day before I was supposed to go home for x-mas break. Being able to see the traffic coming towards (formerly behind) you is scary, especially while gradually going sideways towards a 50' steep embankment. Over correcting and snapping the back end 180 the other way almost instantly was equally as scary. Piled up snow, mud, and water in the median ditch cushioned the impact. No easily visible damage, but the car never felt the same after. Definitely tweaked the rear subframe and further screwed up the not-so-straight frame. It could have been much worse though.
Throttle steering across empty parking lots on my campus was nearly a daily source of entertainment. During January/February we got snow every single day for over 4 weeks straight. I'm one of the many that learned just how ridiculously lousy ES100s are in the snow, especially with lots of negative camber. 3rd gear, 1000rpm, maybe 15% throttle on a perfectly flat street created wheel spin. Any street more than 2 or 3 degrees uphill was nearly impossible to climb.

I voted 4-5. I probably won't even have a road-ready E30 until after winter anyways, so hopefully one of those 4-5 isn't me. The Audi 90 Quattro with manually lockable rear differential I bought a month ago should get me through the winter just fine :D

I never had problems with controlling my car on ES100s, the scary part was trying to stop.. my friend had the same tires and his car wouldn't even move :)

That's why the ES100 is called a "Summer High Performance Tire" not a "Winter Tire".

Let's drive fast and have fun.

My bronzit will probably get taken out when we get our "freak snow storms" that typcially last a day or two and then melt. Some idiot will probably hit me while I'm driving.

Either that or my sister will steal my car again and return it with a bigass dent.

I am looking foward to it. I havent washed my bottlecaps in a couple years now. You can tell thier original color because they scratched some of the crap off when putting the new tires on. Im gonna slap those on with the nice blocky bridgestones and pull off the Alpina spoiler. Just in case i ever actually have to drive in snow.

I might be leavin OP and relocating to Lawrence in full for next sememester and there you can take the bus anywhere.
            Im now E30less.

Times like this I'm glad Glendale / Phoenix / Peoria or any of the valley gets any snow at all. But also I could do without the triple digit months and rain is like snow here, people can't drive.

Wouldn't count on it.... I dont have a car to drift anymore ( see sig )

Let someone else take the AVS100s in the snow to see how much fun they have.

As for snow-related crashes, it better not snow in Chicago.
