My first E30

Howdy,

Recently picked up an 84 323i sedan. It's a little rough but it was cheap. It had been sitting a few years so after getting it to fire up, drove it into the garage and blew a rusty brake line. Ended up replacing a lot of the brake hardline, replacing the T and soft lines in the rear, and patching a rusted spot on the fuel line.

My boss probably regretted selling it to me since it ended up sitting here in his parking space for 3 weeks while I fixed things on the weekends as I had time or while waiting on parts to show up.

Sea foamed the car once it was able to move again. Car fires right up but only runs on 5 cylinders and has a hunting idle after it warms up. I've found and fixed a couple vacuum leaks so far.

Said screw it and drove it home on 5 cyl. Made the 18 mile trip without fuss. managed to fit it in the garage with my other project car a 97 Miata.

Gave it a quick rinse and put the BMW CCA badge on. I really like grill badges on old cars so I joined the club mostly just to get a badge lol

Hi, thanks for the interest. I've been working on the BMW about as often as I've been checking this site lol. It's on the back burner as I collect parts and work on other projects. I'll start a build thread once I actually have progress to share.

In the meantime I have been enjoying the sunshine driving the Miata most days. My buddy and I also just fixed up 50cc scooters that we cruise around downtown with. Mine is a 96 Yamaha Razz and his is an 84 Honda Spree.

I wouldn't say that I'm saving the car... I'm a big fan of the Motortrend show Roadkill. I'd say this car very much fits with the don't get it right, just get it running mentality.

It has spent several years in Ohio, so it's got plenty of rust. Most of which I am going to call patina and ignore :)

I used to watch Roadkill when I had a Motortrend subscription. Not a bad mentality, it's easy to let perfection get in the way of progress.

Finally getting back to working on this car more. Not gonna lie, it's mostly sat the past year. Lots of projects with the house and travel for work pushed this to the back burner. I have made some progress though. First was putting a new hood shock so I could stop being smacked in the back of the head when it falls lol. Put in new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor which seems to have resolved the running on 5 problem. The main issues at this point keeping it from being something I can hop in and drive are all vacuum leaks and oil pan gasket leak. I have the pan gasket just been waiting for some warmer weather to tackle it. As for the vacuum leaks, seems like every hose I track down is split. Would love to just simplify it down to the bare minimum to run decent.
