    E30 1986 2-door from ESTONIA - restoration project.

    Hello from Estonia.

I bought this car over two years ago. I have been doing lot of maintenance and fixing all sorts of things. At the moment my E30 is on the body rotisserie get cleaned for the bodyshop. But this will be a long story before we get there where i am now. To tell you everything from the car and also what have i done with it, i have to start from the beginning.

WARNING - lot of pictures coming!

I have never posted my thread to a international forum, cause i just never had the time and when i had the time my brain won't co-operate. English is not my everyday language so sometimes i'm struggeling with the words. If something is not right or wrong written, please correct me. Thanks for that! :)

I have had many bmw's over the time. My first one was E28 520i from 1982 and since then, i just gave my finger to German. From that day on i just has been a disease and in a good way. But not in a good way for a wallet. My list of bmw's is not long, but enough to tell that something is wrong with my head. Im just gonna write the list down so i don't forget.

    2x E28 - 520i & 518
    3X E34 - 525TDS/540iA and 525iT
    4X E30 - 318iT/325i/316i & 320i
    7x E39 - All 525D or 530D wagons
    1x E87 - 120dA
    1x F31 - 320d X-drive

    Enough of the list. :)
The car i wanna talk about was born 35 years ago, 1986. It has two doors (some of you say its a coupe, but it isn't - correct should be 2-door sedan. From the factory it came with 2.0L straight six engine and a manual gearbox and painted in Delphin gray 184 color. Option list is quite short.
Electric moonroof and powerwindows. Also power mirrors, but they dont work at the moment. We will fix that in some point.

The car was brought to Estonia in 2004 and since then i am a third owner. My friend bought it back in 2008 and since that day he drove only 22000km. He kept it only for summer which makes sense! From the factory it was 2.0 (M20B20) inline six with stickshift. I don't remember anymore why he did the swap, but now it has 2.7L ETA engine block, 885 cylinderhead, lightened flywheel, somekind of Alpina chip (don't ask, i haven't figured that out yet) and the cherry on the top a dogleg gearbox which makes the driving a freaking pleasure but also you need to be aware all the time, cause im used to normal type of gearboxes where first gear is up, not down. But slowly i will get used to that.

Until that very day i have been not able to indentify the exact model of the gearbox. Searched everywhere, nothing. But i will figure this out as well. :)

Interior is almost original. Only front seats have been replaced - pretty rare recaro seats. Seats are in one piece but they need some work. Luckily i have a friend who knows how to do the seats. So im not worried. But everything is done by right order.

And now the most important list - "to do list".

    *All engine fluids and filters.
    *Timingbelt.
*Sparkplugs and ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor.
*Rear axle support and both trailingarms.
*Front and rear brakes needs to be replaced and checked.
    *Fuel and cooling hoses.
    *Fueltank

The Recaro seats. Need some work but nothing too bad. Still in one piece. Usually they are like someone has been eating those for the lunch.

The heart. 35+ years old and still runs. In the old days the knew how to make good and reliable engines.

I just love the way it looks from the front. Specially that duckface lower add on. Its original and not a single crack.

Im new to the forum, so i takes time to get used to all that new enviroment. How things work, how to upload pictures and stuff.

Lets continue with the thread. As i mentioned before some of the parts needed to be changed before i could crank it. So i went to the autoparts shop and bought what i needed.

    *ingition wires from BOSCH
*sparkplugs from BOSCH - some say that BMW doesn't like bosch made plugs. I don't know, it runs pretty smoothly.
    *distributor cap from BERU
    *rotor from BERU

Also replaced oil and oil filter. Yes i know this not the right oil for the M20 engine, but this oil was the fastes one to get so i thought why not. Still better than that few years old shit in the oilpan sucked up by a oilpump. :D

    *oil TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 ENERGY
    *oil filter from MAHLE

Car on the lift i had a change to inspec it underneath. Nothing what makes me smile. But i didn't purchase new car from the dealership. It's 35+ years old gentleman and needs to be taken care of. And i was somehow prepared for that sight.
There is no other solution than fix it. :)

Managed to find decent rear subframe and trailing arms. I will take them apart and send them to sandblasting and powdercoating.

Meanwhile in the garage. Front headlights were bad, reflectors rusted and lenses full of rockchips. I had two options. Option A was to search for the good used ones cause new lights will cost a small fortune if we're talking about the pre-facelift ones. Option B was to find an alternative replacement. And thats the direction i took. I know that many of you probably won't like the idea using DEPO products, but i had no choise. While axle parts are in the sandblasting i needed to fix the lights so i could get the stamp to my technical passport from inspection office and could hit the road before end of the summer. Don't worry, i kept the original lights because i know my self pretty well. In some point it will disturb me and i will replace them again. But for the moment they are good enough.

One day phone rang. The axle parts are ready for pick up. Didn't think too long. Man, they look i would say sexy, but its inappropriate. I rather say that they looks much much better than before.

Bought some rubber boots for the driveshafts and new brake cylinders. You are probably wonderin why im not uprgading the rear axle to a brake disc version ? There is a good reason for that. Mine came with drumbrakes and since its not a track toy, its just a cruiser around in the city and on the highway or country roads, there is no point to replace the rear brake system. And also i want to keep it as timeless as possibe. Few small changes will be, but nothing much.

I think the rear brake system is a bit under engineered because there is definately room for some more springs. Enough of joking. Handbrake system was so rusted i just threw it away and bought everything new from dealership. Those small round clips are for the handbrake cable to keep it in place.

Getting ready to replace the rear axle. As you saw the pictures earlier, that old one is not the one i should keep if i want to use it on the public road. And inspection guy wint let me pass the incpection with that rear axle.

Also the right window lifter stopped working. Took it apart and seems there is some electrical issue (im not an electrician) and also under the motor there is some kind of copper bushing which was broken in half. 3D printed new bushing but that solve my problem.

Went to the easiest way and bought new (used ones). You cant buy only motor, it comes with the window lifter and its a axpensive thing. Around 1200.- euros. Definately wont buy that.
Instead i got both used ones for 150.- euros. Good deal!

Looks like you are going for an original restoration, trying to minimize modifications. It's a good option as these cars get older.

I've subscribed to this thread, looking forward to updates.

Finally i got the stamp and car is road legal after 8 years of sitting in the garage. To be honest, i can not describe that happy feeling behind an old E30 wihtout any driving assistans. Just pure driving pleasure and the proper feel of the steering wheel.

Proper wash before hitting the road.

Looks like you are going for an original restoration, trying to minimize modifications. It's a good option as these cars get older.

I've subscribed to this thread, looking forward to updates.
Yes, im trying to keep that close to original. Only small modification what would be is suspension (D2 coilovers) and small upgrade of the soundsystem. Everything else stays as you see.
Also i try to update it as much as i can. As you read, i bought it two years ago and lot has happend since then. But wait and youll see. :)

                            Thank you!

One morning i drove to work and smelled petrol but could find anything that leaked. But when i went to the smoke break i noticed some petrol stains under the car. I was pretty sure that some of the fuel hose or fuel line gone bad. What came out, fuel pump decided to pee itself. Great! At that time i worked in a carparts store and managed to find new pump from our warehouse. Just a friendly advice, dont buy Meat & Doria stuff. It squealed like a pig. But i had nothing else at the moment so i had to pleased that i even got something.

Fuel pump bracket almost rusted away. I had to use zipties to make it stay there.
