Late to the party. I would probably say this has been title washed. It very well could have been a stolen car at one point. There are some things that are clearly M3.
The 3rd brake light is mounted up high. My understanding this was done on M3 due to the tall wing. Others are mounted down low. Correct me if I am wrong. Someone else mentioned the coolant reservior as well and the antena. You would expect this from someone someone doing a full conversion. The cost to do a full conversion IMO is cost prohibative(SP?). It is a detail that would be easy to overlook. I would be pulling off bumpers and checking VIN numbers on all the panels. If they are none to be found I am bet this car was stolen and given a new title long ago.
It reminds me of a thread I read about a guy who bought an M3 that was a re-constructed stolen car. I am not saying it is but there is clearly something up with this.
OP-Those Kosei wheels are not very good. I will be kind and take them off of your hands for $200 shipped.Last edited by 88m3SanDiego; 12-31-2009, 01:02 PM.Dan

Also has the M3 trunk compartment cover. I bet it was an 85 318i that the previous owner had and welded on the back half of a real m3 and then got a special construction title in 89 which would then give him a legitimate 89 318i title. I loved how he proved his car knowledge by telling us he had other people work on his e46 and not being able to answer any specific questions about his e30. I hate it when people claim to be enthusiast cause they buy a couple of parts but don't know a damn thing about their car.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

yeah, that's very possible too.
And good catch with the break light! But isn't there also a possiblity that it was modified?

Sure you can modify it. I would be curious to pull it apart and see how clean the job is. Most people who do these conversion half ass them because they don't have enough money to buy a real M3. Any corner that can be cut usually happens. The issue I see, is the details that should have been cut have not and the car, no original vins are available 318 or M3. A new Vin that was issued by New York, I have watched enough movies to know that things happen in NY is on the up and up:roll:. It seems shady.
Now if it was me and I got a good deal I would have snatched it up gutted it and put a cage and have a fun track car. Who cares what the title said. I just would not put a lot of money in it to make it look good. It is never going to be worth much as a whole car because of the title and lack of VINsDan

how ironic r3v members are. its becoming boring around here. you used to have to work to make members look stupid. now they do it for youComment

What I don't understand is that, aside from the aforementioned trace paint differences and the beat up front end, every detail that I can think of has been covered, and covered well. If, indeed, it was re-titled in '89 and is technically a small-taillight '89 318i M3 or whatever, corners should have been cut considering the E30 M3 was available brand spanking new at the time and would have probably costed a heck of a lot less than doing a legit, detail-oriented, OEM part M3 conversion on a non-M3...Comment

I didn't want to say it but I think it's either a T boned or stolen M3 re-titled as a 318i. Not only is the coolant reservoir there but it has the proper M3 only mounts as well, bonded windshield and M3 A pillar covers, M3 roof antenna, high 3rd brake light but notice the M3-only jack cover in the trunk. Not only does it have the cover but it also has the mount for it...again, only an M3 would have that.
We're just trying to get to the bottom of it and let the original poster know exactly what he has. I would think he'd want to know instead of just going off what the previous owner told him. Besides, if it were a legit conversion as claimed, you'd think there would be tons of pictures of the process. That's really what I was hoping to see."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

It's an M3. The shifter console isn't from an older car. The circut breaker wouldn't be there.
Too many things point to the fact that it is an m3 with a 318 title and vin.Yours truly,
Rich
