Otis, the M42 does not have timing marks on the damper. It has a notch that lines up on the oil filter housing though to show TDC. I just set my timing light to 0 and lock timing in the software to verify.
I'm not sure why you can't enter a larger value for the #1 tooth. I have no idea why the primary trigger settings cannot be entered as-is....but its what we have to work with
Can you not set up your spark like this?

It's not really worth tuning anything else until your primary trigger is correct. Your engine can "run" with amazingly bad setup, it can just run much better with a proper set up!Last edited by wazzu70; 11-11-2013, 09:24 PM.-Nick

^ LOL im retarded. was trying to enter 114 total in first trigger angle box.
I can setup as displayed. That makes much more sense. Im going to try this tomorrow morning and ill report back with results.

LOL... I'm anxious to try this. If the car weren't so damn loud I'd go out and do it right now. ;)"A good memory for quotes combined with a poor memory for attribution can lead to a false sense of originality."

TLDR....how much boost do you have to run to hit 300rwhp with m42?"I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

update for this morning:
With the trigger settings at 69+45 the engine barely starts. I have to trim angle (deg) up to about 35 or 40 before it will even hold idle without my foot on the gas pedal and even then I can tell the timing is off because It sounds like boxer engine.

I sent a PM to Matt Cramer for him to chime in with this. I know Blueapplesoda did a setup for M42 and used similar tooth settings.
Weird your engine does worse with the correct trigger angle. Either the software has something weird Im missing or your tune is tweaked to work with the wrong trigger settings.Last edited by wazzu70; 11-12-2013, 10:55 AM.-Nick

sounds good. Looking forward to hearing from him. For now I just went back to my previous settings. Runs and drives, but if its wrong... well then its wrong and Im not sure how I feel about that.I sent a PM to Matt Cramer for him to chime in with this. Here is an old thread on the same topic:

interesting subject on rewiring the injectors. I think im going to get a timing light on my engine to verify.
The problem is clearly timing during cranking and warmup. After the engine reaches 190 degrees It seems to run fine on the 60+0 setting.
Could we be having an issues with closed/open loop values throwing things off?

Everything is supposed to be built up from the trigger setting, so I would just build a config up from scratch. Obviously you aren't interested in doing that so we just need to figure out where the problem is.
When you change the trigger setting that much it going to impact both your fuel and timing. When you get it out of warmup mode, does the AFR read lean or rich?
Hopefully someone who has experience with MS and this engine can chime in. I do find it weird Derek in the thread I linked was having issues with the correct settings as well. Not sure why he was or how it was resolved.-Nick

I agree. Im not going to move on further until I can start and idle the engine on the correct trigger settings.
by the time Im out of warmup and idling Im at about 12.5 to 13.0 AFR. I've considered scrapping the whole tune and starting completely over, but I haven't done that yet...
Im not sure what to do at this point. Ive considered calling up my tuner and asking for help... After all I did pay him over $800 in dyno time to make this work, but even then I am unsure because my car NEVER started or idle'd properly with his tuning.
ugh.

I am going to start a new project and start from scratch with the "correct" trigger/timing settings and go from there. We'll see how it goes. Won't be a for a few days though as it takes forever to build the tune up from scratch using the megamanual as a you go.
