wow, nice group of e30's sitting at your house. And that's a really nice $400 car... If you do go M50, I may eventually be looking for an M42 to rebuild/build up depending on the price haha.

More engine cleanup:
Valve cover and intake manifold were cleaned with Simple Green and a wee bit of aircraft aluminum stripper. Next they were painted with VHT Wrinkle Paint and set in front of a Ceramic space heater.
I decided to sand the raised areas. This was 500 grit. Next is 800 and 1000 then clear.

New gaskets come in from Pelican Parts on Monday. Plan on advancing the intake cam 5 deg to have some fun.
Already debaffled the intake, so may be stopping by a friend's shop to remove some thing from the exhaust.Last edited by rightcoastbias; 12-12-2010, 10:44 PM.Comment

I'm a junior MechE at Clemson, but I'm doing a co-op in Greenville for the spring semester. You know Max and Victor?
Yes, I've heard it referred to as debaffling. I removed the ~3" diameter tube from between the drivers headlamps and the air box. Then I removed the ~2" diameter cylinder from inside the air box. Both items were brittle and deteriorated.
I know M42 aftermarket exhausts show little to no gains. How does a hollowed cat sound?Comment

He tried to sell me some poly CABS, but they were E36 RTABs. :giggle: I'm still waiting for him to find the E30 set. Max and that crew seem to be some good guys. Lots of experience and very helpful. Offering to help if I have trouble with my 300 level classes. Final grades just posted one B the rest are A's!
I bought a bunch of Delrin. Not sure what for, but could be useful.

Edit: Made a shift knob because mine was broke.

Not super clean, but it was a steal. I'm the second owner. It was a family car. Owner was a fighter pilot in FL, handed it down to his son who drove it through law school. It was leaking oil so he just wanted it gone.
I transferred in with all my prereq's and gen ed's complete making me a junior. Finished my 200's and one 300 this semester. Differential Equations with linear algebra, Thermal and Fluid Systems, MechEng Lab, Mechanical and Manufacturing Systems, and Mech Eng seminar. Man, I'm 25 and married. It doesn't matter.
I've lurked your threads. M42 love. ;)Comment

Snapped this before it got dark.

I advanced the cam approximately 3 deg. Sounds quite interesting. I used some permatex between the throttle body and intake manifold, so I won't be driving it until tomorrow. Then I can comment on where it moved the power. The chains are already noticeably quieter with the new revised tensioner.Last edited by rightcoastbias; 06-19-2012, 08:31 AM.Comment
