Sucks. One of the first things a lot learn is following too close. If I am in any kind of traffic I leave multiple car lengths in front of me. Of course random people will dive bomb in front of me and slam on the brakes but that is better than people stopping short. Live and learn. It definitely sucks.

It's funny I don't get how anyone rear ends somebody. If you keep at MINIMUM 3 car lengths between you and the car in front you'll always have enough braking and maneuvering distance. I usually put even more in front of me.
