Picked this 1984 318iup via Craigslist and have brought it back to life. I needed a new daily as my old daily was a v8 camaro with almost 400whp. I decided on a budget of a $1000 and wanted something good on gas and preferably rear wheel drive. Total spent so far, $900 including price of car.
Started as this:
Then I lowered it(craigslist find JOM springs), put a set of $200 rims/tires (aslo craigslist), E46 power seats (also craigslist), vented and slotted 325 rotors and calipers on it and painted it flat black.
Big mistake, that was a waste of $32 worth of flat black paint, it oxidized in the sun and made huge white patches within 3 weeks.
I then decided to paint it proper using PPG Omni single stage. That was also badly executed as I chose a metallic, and let me tell you, its a fucking chore to spray single stage metallic. It only looked good in direct sunlight from distances greater than 10ft. see below:
I've now decided to repaint in a solid colour so I can at least wetsand and polish it to look like I know what I am doing. Here is a test shot of the new colour:
