How can you total a 15 year old car with 53k? and it has not been on the frame machine yet so it is not a fact that it has frame damage.
Thanks for the good wishes.
The car is still only worth $5-6,000 for all intents and purposes.
dude having your frame pulled is not as expensive as you think! I work across the street from a body shop. I think one of the cars we worked on for them needed some straighting and is was well under a grand!
What will total it out is that you took it to the dealer and they will quote all new parts...

I've had two frame jobs - both cherokees, one hit on the pass b pillar, one hit on the front pass corner - pushed in 4 inches!

I don't hate the surfboard & I think with any lesser bumper it would have been totaled so I want the protection, plus I want it to be the way it was. I tried to do the euro bumper swap but was told it would not look right on my late model car.
P.S.
Does this qualify as an R3V?
Also work on cars here is cheap (comparitively) I doubt the labor & full paint job will be more than 1800.00.
Doesn't count as a r3v cause it wasn't your fault and you weren't doing anything stupid.
I think my point about totalling the car out is because I wouldn't want to drive a car that could have been considered totalled and had frame damage... it's never going to be the same again.
Ok. I didn't know the criteria for R3V glad it doesn't qualify then.
As to the totaled question. I got more than all the parts necessary including a new is lip and complete front clip for less than 800.00 the labor and paint even if it has frame damage will be no more than 2k so that is 2800.00 so even at your low value of 5-6k it is still not totaled. I submit the car is worth at least 8k (I had an offer of 7k I turned down in May)
Yeah, at 53k and a family car, I wouldn't total it. The car is worth way more than $5k in my opinion. But you have to understand where TJ is coming from. Frame damage is a bitch. You can get it fixed, but it won't ever be the same. When you get it back, drive it like an old woman.
Good luck with things. I wish you the best.
Current BMW's:
2004 330Ci
1986 European 325i cabrio
1986 735i
With a lesser bumper the force of the impact would have spread toward the center, destroying the radiator, ac condenser, fan & possibly water pump/front of engine components. All of these are intact. Then the car would have been toast.
I am perfectly happy with the big bumpers. As I said I attempted the euro swap (ask Kencopperwheat) but was told my late model car would not accept them gracefully.

When I get it back to L.A. it is going back to Mom, so it will literally be driven BY an old woman. LOL I am buying a Landcruiser in L.A. and driving back in it.
The cabrio will still be mine and it will revert to being driven only around B.H to the hairdresser, manicurest & the supermarket.
I am waiting for the dealer's report (Monday) and then we will know if there is frame damage.
