If i had to pick one of the two, Id pick a z4, but id have to have the removable hard top. I think that car is damn sexy. And if i were buy a new car, it probably would be to drive it to its limits because everything is soo damn expensive to fix. Thats why i would keep my e30 and beat that thing.
I find that hard to believe since I have driven both and they feel completely different. They may be based on similar multilink designs but I doubt the spring rates and shock bounds are the same.
The E36 M3 felt a hell of a lot softer to me. I drove an E36 M3 to test a Z4 3.0.

Yea spring rates are not the same but same design and allows the same type of ride.
No, the Z4 is based on the E46 3 series. BMW actually stated that in a press release because people were concerned with that. The 15 degree semi-trailing arm was the biggest drawback of the Z3 and is what kept it from being as competetive as it could be.
The front suspension is similar but almost every small BMW in the last 30 years has has a McPherson strut system. The rear is now a 5 link system. The spring rates are very stiff on that car and in its small size makes it ride poorly.
I dont doubt the E36 M3 can get around faster on that softer suspension than the Z4.
i like the exchange, im personally a big fan of e36 m3s. but i dont like those wheels, especially on e36s they just dont look good, if you find some m contours id say jump on those.

Z4 is a convertible. Case closed for me. I despise convertibles with more passion than I love the Argentine National soccer team. Thats a lot. But I know I have a rare and unexplainable contempt for all things convertible so dont mind me.
