Just clean the bay. Get it hot, spray with degreaser, spray with water. Don't be dumb about it and spray directly on the alternator or on electrical connections and you'll be fine. Generally anything in there can get wet, and definitely the whole engine itself that'll be covered in oil as well as the subframe, rack, and transmission is all fine.

I dont think it sits higher.
It just looks like, because the front wheel arches are higher than the rear ones on the E30. Compare to the chassis line over the arches, front and back...

    When I first bought her

    And how she looks today:

And yes i know i need to lower the front more. Not sure why it sits so much higher but it is annoying.

In the corners I can keep up with lots of cars that have MUCH more power than I do. When my instructor drove we passed a crummy driver in a 996. That must have been embarrassing for him :)

Never autocrossed my car with the M42 in it, but there is a significant difference in turn in with the lighter engine, so I assume auto-x would be a good place for the M42. Racing in the rain is also a good place for it to even the playing field :)

Nice pic and I checked out the link in your sig. I may be selling my e90 here soon and will have a TON of mods for sale. If you're interested let me know I'll give you a list of stuff that would potentially be for sale.

Engine bay (which I just recently finished the valve cover in gloss black, spark plug cover in M tricolors and intake mani in black wrinkle finish):

Just need to finish cleaning the rest of the bay up.

I've only been on a racetrack several times, and in each scenario it wasn't in my own car.
Also I did a "fun run" in my Peugeot back in high school but that was for jokes.
On the track the car is beautifully balanced but slightly underpowered. But still a blast to drive and pretty competitive compared to similarly set up cars.

Autox is where I feel the car's and my own abilities excel. It's a totally different ball game than on the track though.
