Few pics of fixing Matt's car, part 1 (56k killer)

So part one of the "engine swap" (I won't call it so because it's just putting a good running M20 in place of one much less so) took place tonight, with the goal being getting the car cleaned out and somewhat ready to receive the engine from the donor car.

We ran into a few snags, nothing too big, the worst being the exhaust not wanting to part ways with the exhaust manifolds. So we did what any barnyard E30 mechanics would do, we just unbolted it behind the cat and made it work. :)

Don't ask why the shift lever's still there. I don't even know the answer. Part 2 tomorrow will deal with cleaning up the engine bay, getting rid of some more insulation, replacing all transmission and engine related mounts/bushings with upgraded pieces, and the installation of the engine/transmission with new clutch and bearings. Wish us luck!

Man, I don't know how you got the motor out with the exhaust and the shift still intact. I had a hard enough time wiggling an M20 with just the tranny attached out of the car.

Why didn't you spend a little time to clean up the transplant engine before you dump it in there?

Ah, I knew it wasn't in but it looks really bad in its current state :) Good call cleaning it up before dropping it in.

Yeah, we ripped all that black insulation shit off of the firewall/tranny tunnel while we could get to it, it was just crumbling and falling off.

                    Weight savings! ;)

We would have gotten more done but these pics were taken when we were getting EXHAUSTED, at about 6:30am EST. I just woke up and am getting ready to get cracking on day two, much more excited because it's 75 degrees and sunny outside.

Wonder how much more tranny noise will enter the car without that insulation.

A bit more, but I'm going to guess with his exhaust it's not a quiet ride anyways. I have noticed local late models are quieter than earlies in the cabin, insulation differences? Yanking engines is fun, cleanup takes awhile though.

Brandon (beej), what did you use to get your engine bay so clean? I was using TSP and some other products but didn't have much to show after awhile of scrubing a week ago.
