YAY got the stereo installed. It was a little tricky but with that other thread by stereoinstaller1 I got it sorted out.

So, since it's an 85 318i it has no premium sound system, and has the fader in the dash. That means it's a 6 wire system with the two left speakers (-) spliced common and same with the right two. With newer e30s you can just start unwrapping the harness to expose the splice where you can separate the grounds to make it a standard 8 wire system. This year e30 it seems the splices are hidden really well, I think someone said under the front seat? So I can't use the factory harness as is, I have to run a new pair of speaker wires to the front two speakers and use the wires in the harness for the rears.

Here are all the wires hooked up, notice the yel/red and blu/red have been eliminated. I also taped the wires up nice and neat before mounting the stereo. When I pushed the stereo in, I had the gauge cluster out so I could reach behind and route wires, but I didn't get them all and knocked out the power window breaker wire and didn't know until I was on the freeway and trying to roll up the windows!

JVC KD-APD49 from the matrix, sounds pretty good and has 30pin connector for ipod control. And it's mostly red leds so it matches kind ok! Sticks out of the dash too far though. Haven't had time to fiddle with the EQ, but these stock e30 speakers aren't so bad. Rubber surrounds are still intact and everything! I definitely need my sub in here though.

Anyone know where to get this little light bulb on the left side of the SI indicator board? I have grain of wheat bulbs at the shop, but they're bayonet mount not solder mount, and I don't know the voltage and forgot to check while it was apart.

Here's the mess under the dash, there's an aftermarket alarm with a switch that I'm not sure what it does. It turns the little LED on and off but that seems like it, I haven't learned all the stupid little idiosyncrasies of it yet. My keyfob is broken and I've heard the alarm go off a few times, like when I reconnect the battery and I could turn it off by turning the key in the ignition, or I locked the door with the window open and opened the door or something. It disabled the ignition but then I flipped the switch and it worked again. The black box says python system 8.

Also, are the power door locks, gas cap and trunk lock part of the BMW or part of the aftermarket alarm?

I got my bushings in the mail, woot! From what I understand, all I need to do is press out the old and install the new. But which way do I face them, and is there anything else I need to adjust or replace to fit these spacers? Also, when I go to get an alignment, do I have to let them know the caster will be out of spec for a 318i and to leave it that way, or is there even a caster adjustment since everything else is stock?

Welcome, you want the holes closer to the sides of the car, there should be a marking or arrow to line everything up. There's only toe adjustment for the front on e30's, no other adjustments.

So my dome lights are broken, of course, I went to change a bulb and the plastic just fell apart. Like every single plastic piece from the 80's. So I cheaped out and bought a shit ass used one on ebay and I'm very unhappy VERY UNHAPPY! I didn't notice but it's missing one of the tabs, and the bulb was DOA.

Anyway, I'm going to buy two new ones and found a problem with both sides. On the driver's side there is a flimsy plastic plate that the light clips in to, it's kinda a vent or something because those bulbs get HOT, well anyway, it's cracked of course and I can't find a new one. Anyone know what it is or where to find one, and then how to install it without tearing out the headliner or my hair?

You can see the plate in this ebay ad. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Interior...7cfc31&vxp=mtr

Second, it seems that the lights only work when the door is opened, they don't work when flipped to the other settings for constant on. Is there a separate fuse for constant on vs. door open? I haven't had time to chase it down, so any help pointing me in the right direction is appreciated.

These seem to be cheap and flimsy, have you broken any? What about an aftermarket dome light or something from another vehicle?

Do you own a Bentley repair manual for the e30? It seems like yer going to be doing Alotta DIY, so if you haven't bought one by now, you should.

Ah ok, last time I searched there was some overlap in years or models or something and someone said get a specific one for the 85 318i because it's a weird year or something. I don't remember where or when I saw that info though :/

Yeah I'd be open to buy yours, what are they going for about $40?

Silly car keeps getting hot, low on coolant (tap water like a poor) every 3-4 days. No coolant in oil, no steam from exhaust, no leaks up front. "Where does it go?" said the dad to his fat little son about the cake that went missing?

Today I checked and there were a few drops on the "big plastic protective thingy" (yes that's a technical term) under the radiator overflow line, but no dripping from the line. That's my only hint. Think the radiator cap could be bad?

You need to pressure test the cooling system. If there is a leak, you aren't helping by having tap water in there. Any decent shop will have a pressure tester, test takes like 1min to perform, once engine is cooled down of course.

                            Somebody poisoned the waterhole.

                            That's the water pump.

I have no idea how bad the timing chain is, so I'm gonna pull it all, do the timing chain, water pump, valves, oil pan and slam it back in.

The odometer doesn't work, the small gear was broken, so I go to fix it, I bought a new gear and everything, simple enough right?

Nope. These gears are weird and rubbery, and covered in some weird waxy stuff that is making it skip gears and give me the cancer.

I begin to clean it out, but being too rough with them and they'll crumble... So now I have a whole new gear set in the mail.

I also wanted to install a switch for the radio antenna because I don't like driving around with it up, but the stereo always puts it up, even if not on AM/FM. So I'll order a lighted defroster switch and sand off the symbol and make a new symbol for an antenna. But for now I made the wiring so I could test and have it ready to just pop in. That was the hole for the speaker fader, but who needs that junk!? When the new switch comes I'll add wires for the backlight.

This is just to round out the 5 pic max. I need a thumbscrew for behind the dash under the cluster.

                                Lookie lookie what I got!

Maintenance records! You called it golde

Now I know about 15 years ago they put in new shocks, springs, cat converter, clutch kit, clutch slave cylinder and exhaust header bolts.
And holy crap it had 160k miles in 2002 and the odo broke 10k miles after that. The odo sits at 170k now, and for about the last 12 years. Must be way over 250k miles on this bish WOW!
