BMW 2002 Alpina Widebody from NC

Hello everyone my name is Tyler with CM Performance in Bessemer City, NC. I know this is an E30 page primarily but I know most will appreciate this. Here is a personal build I am doing for myself during the time we are not working on customer cars, I hope you enjoy.

Let me catch you up to speed:

    12/29

The car was bought as known project sight unseen from Chicago, IL as a "rust free" type of project just to assemble and be a driver. Upon arrival of the car we noticed that was not entirely the case and realized this car will go under almost a full nut/bolt refurbish/restoration with a touch of our own outlaw flare while maintaining true to BMW heritage. Once we received the car it was immediately placed onto the lift to inspect and see where to go with the project. The car was about 80% rust free other than the absolute known common areas- pedal box as well as driver side rocker panel towards the rear. Thankfully this car is a non sunroof car and also a blue plate California car so while there was some rust it was in fact minimal in all cases.

Once the body was assessed we jumped straight to the mechanicals- engine compression test was in order because of the way the engine felt after a drive upon delivery. As suspected the compression was not where we would have liked for it to be for the plans that we have for the car. A full engine teardown and rebuild was in the very very near future for this car.

With the motor on the stand and contemplating what to do considering I had just purchased an virtually 0 mile S14 engine the same day a tough decision was made but we decided it was best to keep the numbers matching engine to the numbers matching car and save the S14 for a rainy day.

    Engine Parts list:

    10:1 Tii pistons
    IE 292 Billet Cam
    Coated Rod Bearings .25MM
    Coated Main Bearings .25MM
    HD Rocker Arms
    39MM Exhaust Valves
    47MM Intake Valves
    HD Valve Springs
    Chromoly Retainers
    ARP main studs
    ARP head studs
    ARP Rod Bolt/Nut
    MLS Head Gasket
    Oil pan baffle/windage tray
    Dual DCOE 40MM Weber Carburators
    Water divider
    Silicone hose kit
    Water bypass pipe
    New Intake Studs
    New Exhaust Studs
Ireland Engineering Tri "Y" Exhaust Header
    Ireland Engineering Stainless Exhaust

Other misc parts - gasket sets, rocker hardware, timing components, freeze plugs etc etc

Cylinder Head is receiving the supporting treatments:
    port
    polish
3 angle valve job all by former engine builder for Penske Racing.

    Ignition Setup:

    MSD Ignition box
    Pertronix Electronic Ignition
    Tach Adapter
    Bosche Red Coil
    8mm plug wires
Plugs-BP6ES - we will see how these work, I ran Brisk plugs in my E-Prod race car

Now that the engine has been planned out it was time to think about the suspension, we cannot build one thing without the other(and you guessed it) the slippery slope has commenced. Everything must be supporting or "congruent".

    Suspension parts list:

    New Bilstein Shocks/struts
    IE Adjustable Camera Plates
IE 22MM hollow front sway bar
IE 25MM solid rear sway bar
    both with new hardware
IE Stage II Springs(may go coil over in the front still undecided)
    Control arm bushings
    Trailing arm bushings
    Ball joints
    Tie rods
    Center steering bar
    Steering box refresh kit
    Steering coupler
    Pedal box refresh kit

As parts start to arrive, and the engine goes off to the machine shop its time clean up the inside of the car. 50 year old carpet and sound deadening be gone!

With the passenger rear floor stripped, treated and coated in semi-gloss black(not pictured will update soon) my mind is already churning on the interior- I'm thinking come period correct seats, something from GTS Classic maybe the Hockenheim- we will see.

    01/10

I was able to make some progress on the interior today. Got the rest of the floorpans striped and inspected for rust then treated and sealed. Driver floorpan left untouched as it will be completely replaced when it goes to paint.

    Awesome update:

So who loves pig cheek flares but can not justify fiberglass ones bonding to metal in hopes of them not failing? Say no more- we will be offering one piece hand crafted steel pig cheek flares(at a rather affordable rate). Also some updates on the front motormount reinforcement going in and driver side frame rail and some classic glass cleaning tips! Pics to follow- fenders are basically porn.

With the drivers floorpan replaced it is time to reconstruct the driver side frame rail which is prone to failing because of a leaky master cylinder.

With the frame rail in its time to reinforce the front subframe. A big problem with 2002s is the engine torquing and coming into contact with the radiator. To help resolve this the front subframe is to be reinforced on the driver side motor mount. Weld-thru primer on the inside of all raw metals so that no moisture is trapped in.

Next up will be coil overs for the front. We we're going to do IE springs all the way around but with the flares I would like to have no wheel gap. Here are some photos of the cut strut housings before welding. I am waiting on the new shortened and valved bilstein struts to arrive before completing them to assure fitment. We are using 7" Hypercoil Springs with this conversion.

Here is a small tip for everyone on here. 4000 GRIT steel wool, denatured alcohol and a razor blade.

We are also making out own interior bits in house. Leather 911 RS style inspired door cards front and rear. Usually 2002 panels will have an arm rest, this will not but where the armrest secures to the door there will be a leather pull strap. The rear will have a leather rear sear delete, with plush storage, same with the trunk. Here is a test fit of the door panels before installing the metal flares and getting her off to paint.

    Part porn update!

New old stock euro front signals and polished Talbot mirrors.

I love seeing these kinds of builds. Always amazed by the kind of work that goes into something like this.
Looking forward to seeing more as it progresses.

I like where this is going. Awesome that you are building the M10 and the flares look damn nice.

Welcome! You will find many of us here are also 2002 guys. Do you have any pictures of the rocker repair work?

I love the metal flares, they look fantastic. However, I really don't like the door panels. It looks like a shortcut.

Thank you all for the love. I am very excited to be building this car and hopefully many more, I am also excited about the M10 built we are hoping for 150HP to the wheels. As far as the door panels go, it is not a “shortcut” but a period correct attention to detail. Here is a video like to an original Alpina Rally Car

Pay close attention to the door panel style front and rear, in the photo above there is no pull strap however I wil be making one, seats in this car will be the same as well. The rockers have not been replaced but they will indeed be replaced when the steel flares are welded on. Thank you all again.
