I dunno, I respect the info and all, cuz its always useful, I just dont know if this needs to be taken so seriously. :)

I understand the taken seriously portion... but do realize that the person who pioneered this idea on his e30 was seriously considdering the physics of heat extraction when he came up with this idea. Dr. Gustave is a very, very smart guy.

Heat dicipation at the back of the engine bay with the louvers doesn't make a lot of sense to me. To me, that theory sounds like you are venting air that has been pushed farther back in the engine and bassically heating all of the other components under the hood and keeping more warm air near the radiator for a longer period of time. This is counter productive. By puting the vent where he did, he is dicipating heat at the source, with cooling of the radiator in mind, which ultimately will reduce total under hood temperatures greater than just "venting the hood" at the rear.

Heat produced by an engine has a tendency to collect in the rear of the engine compartment. Thus the reason many high hp muscle cars had rearward facing cowls. That is where you want some sort of heat extraction.

I wonder if you've actually made an air intake? Problem with that is where's that extra air going to be expelled. Turbulence is the word that keeps reeling in my head when I see that "vent".

Edit: I see now that the ribs on the vent are directional. Maybe it won't draw air in, but I still think; front of car (or engine compartment in this case) = intake/ rear = exhaust.
This vent is not entirely for heat extration, it is for letting the large amount of air that comes through the radiator, escape without going under the car, negating lift on the front of the car.

Sorry, but your example using muscle car is crap. If you do your homework, the rearward facing cowl not for letting hot air out, yet inducting COLD air to the carburator.

"Chevrolet pioneer their "Cowl Induction" system which featured a backward facing scoop right at the base of the windshield. This scoop actually received air that was forced backwards after hitting the windshield."

Lets look at a modern example using the Lotus Elise. Sure the car has a different body style, but the idea is the same.

Look at the huge inlet for air to the radiator. Where must the air go? As our resident master air intake builder, Koony, must wonder where this air goes?

Holy shit, look, there is a vent, in the hood, which the air comes out of.

Pretty amazing. Lets follow the air flow trail.

Air ----> Radiator ----> Out Vent in hood.

        Sweet.

Lets look at a few more examples, shall we?

Look at those vents at the back of the hood. How pimp. Oh wait, those are for the cabin filter at the back of the hood. We all know race car drivers need carbon activated fresh air.

Omg! Look at those vents, behind the radiator. Oh wait! What are those back a little further? Oh, those are to expel air off the tires, not heat from the engine.

And for good measure, since we know they ALWAYS follow last in engineering, an American team. Sure looks like this Viper has a huge cowl that "lets hot air out at the back of the hood."

        One last thing,

        Check and mate.

        Asshole.

Considering YOU started this argument, it seems as if you gave the fuck in the first place.

I gave you a decent reply, I welcome your constructive criticism as to why the vent should still be placed on the back of the hood.

                oh yea...

My grandma needs the her Rascal attached to the back of her Buick.

Get with it young yipper snapper.

Great example of coming back with your tail between your legs after getting your ass handed to you.

Stop arguing with people who know what they're talking about, when you clearly don't.

Just because you won't believe me, I did a quick search for some type of legitimacy to my claims. Read it and weep bitches!

How old are you guys? You're comparing million dollar race cars to a burnt out 80's street car.

I heart Koony. The entertainment you have provided has me giggling like a schoolgirl.

                              *EDIT*
Trent, with the cowl induction "hood", do you think it would have enough gap to stick a few gauges in the opening? That would look sicker than AIDS.
