Vlad, how did my paint job look when you saw it last month, because I remember you asking me if that was a BMW factory color, which means to me that it was probably difficult to tell it was rollered. I think when it comes to rollering, you get out of it what you put into it. it took me 2 months of constant work for hours per day.

You're right though, it can't get into every crevaas (spelling?), but with time and wetsanding and proper mixing, it could last a very long time and be virtually indistinguishable from the real paint job.

Its more a method of application than a type of paint. There are certain brands/formulations that work well with this application method, but its really because you use a high density PE roller.

Roller painting a car can be beneficial if you have absolutlely no experience with a spray gun. there's little to no airborne particulates, no need to buy an air compressor or gun, or the required respritory and ocular protection everyone should wear when using spray application methods. A decent compressor with a good sized storage tank will run you atleast $300, constant pressure and not having to wait for your compressor to refill the tank along with other factors is important when trying to get a decent finish.

Its not like someone can just pick up a spray gun and start shooting away. An inexperienced person using a spray gun is more likely to get heavy orange peel, runs and drips, and fish eyes than the same inexperienced person using a HD roller.

The rolling method may take considerably longer, but thats the trade off you deal with. many of the finishes are comparable with less wetsanding then alot of amateur spray jobs that I've seen.

Good example, whatever primate resprayed my car before my buddy saved it from the clutches of death.

I asked if it was OEM paint because it didn't look like any OEM BMW color. My DTM Replica is painted with Mercedes white which is a lot nicer than BMW white. You car does look good and the amout of work you put into it paid out. You can't really tell from 10ft away but if you get closer you can see that it was not 'full blown quality respray'

yes, that is the main thing - you can't get even paint coverage in all areas with the roller, that's why some areas have more paint than the others and you could see that very well, not sure about virtually indistinguishable, it's pretty obvious.. BUT it still looks good for whatever it is. I wouldn't do it but that's just me

            To answer some questions:

I am running 16x8 sportmax 501's with H& R sports. Maybe my car looks high due to the angle.

The paint looks awesome! I have put about 40 hours into it so far, and I am still not done. I used interlux brightside boat paint, which I found to be much glossier than rustoleum.

            The reasons I roller painted:
            Dont have a compressor
dont need fumes in my house(pregnant wife)
            Learning experience
            Touch ups are easy
I had to drive in between coats...so it was much easier not having to tape up the whole car every time
and it is cheap. I could do it for ~$100

It looks really good in person....even better than it looks in the pics. The paint in the pic is straight from the roller. I still have not even did the final wetsand and polish! I know it sounds funky...but it looks good from 4 feet away. Im sure I can get it even better. It looks better than any maaco job.....and better than a lot of spray jobs Ive seen.

Trust me...once I am finished, you will not be able to tell it was rolled on.

The camera doesnt really show the reflectiveness of it either.

It isnt a $3000 paint job, but it looks better than a $1000 paint job that I got on a previous car.

Is anyone addressing the hardness of the paint? I know automotive grade paints use a hardener... it's like epoxy: a two-part chemical thing. With this paint on a roller, what is being done to make sure this stuff doesn't chip easy or be affected by chemicals as easy?

It's single component lacquer. It will be affected by nearly any nonpolar solvent. But, it's easy as pie to repair if damage does occur.

Cant wait to get done. It has been a lot of work, but it has been well worth it!

Thanks 2 M3fan4eva! His car was the first one I saw that had been roller painted.
Nice work! Can't wait to see it out in the sun. This is as far as i've gotten with mine before I got busy with a few other projects. I need to finish it soon.

yea...tjts1, you were another one that got me on the ball.

As far as hardness....the paint isnt even fully cured and I have pressure washed the crap out of it! It had some bird dookie that I couldnt get with a rag so I sprayed bug off on it and pressure washed it off. Worked so good, I did the whole car!

Oh...and it is a one part polyurethane paint. Often used on BOATS that are also exposed to elements. And yes, scratches are very easy to touch up.
