Just think, now when you go off at Putnam, you can collect up some of the corn and drive home for free.

20 mpg on E85 uses much less gas than 40 mpg hybrid on gas.
1/(20*.15) << 1/(40*1)
something like now is progressing towards an improvementComment

good lord you guys are just attacking this guy. Okay, the new impalas really aren't that bad on the inside. For performance, they suck. Most stockish cars do. So what? If it is just a DD, soft suspension, less power, and a quieter ride make sense. Pickup is reasonable, and they are a heck of a lot quieter on the highway.
Of course, the only impala I would ever buy is the 1996 SS and do a 6-speed swap. And I would never buy a car on debt when I could get something similar used and be in the free and clear.Comment

ethanol won't do that....well may be it will, but it will be because it will cause shortages, increased prices across the entire food/goods market, possibly famine and death which will reduce 'global warming'.
I use it because it's similar to 115 octane and you can boost the shit out of the stuff, plus BLUE flames out of the exhaust, I just need a blue car and it will be 2fast2furioz! :D

So the Chevy Impala just so happens to be my rental for the month or so I'm stuck out here in L.A.
Here are my "favorite" things about this car so far:
- Bright ass, plain, basic, red paint job.
- Bench seating up front
- Steering wheel feels like it came off a Power Wheels
- Remote start functionality is hit or miss, more miss than hit.
- Handles like shit
And my favorite so far....
- In panic stops, nose dives like a whale and the mutherfuckin the rear end kicks out

I never looked at new cars that much, but i can say that i would like to see the bench seat make a comeback. And not no split one either. So the Chevy Impala just so happens to be my rental for the month or so I'm stuck out here in L.A.

meh. prices have changed in the short run, give time for people to shift jobs and resources and then see what happens. there's unemployed people and unutilized space in the US and in the world.
corn is not the most useful for fuel, so a plant with less maintenance needed and a wider temperature range would increase acceptable land.
Congress created the extension system nearly a century ago to address exclusively rural, agricultural issues. At that time, more than 50 percent of the U.S. population lived in rural areas, and 30 percent of the workforce was engaged in farming. Extension's engagement with rural America helped make possible the American agricultural revolution, which dramatically increased farm productivity:
* In 1945, it took up to 14 labor-hours to produce 100 bushels of corn on 2 acres of land.
* By 1987, it took just under 3 labor-hours to produce that same 100 bushels of corn on just over 1 acre.
* In 2002, that same 100 bushels of corn were produced on less than 1 acre.
That increase in productivity has allowed fewer farmers to produce more food.
Fewer than 2 percent of Americans farm for a living today, and only 10 percent of Americans now live in rural areas.Comment

I'm thinking that his parents (who seem to have financed the car for him) probably had a good say in this and he's doing the best with what he's got. It doesn't really add up - he was talking about buying an audi 1.8t (which he made fun of me for owning - even in this thread) or some other turbo import but then winds up with a used impala. Sounds like a parent decision to me."We praise or find fault, depending on which of the two provides more opportunity for our powers of judgement to shine."Comment
