December 2020 Car of the Month: dadsbmw

***Editors Note: I've been wanting to feature this car because it has a great story and its new owner keeps evolving the car. Timing worked out perfect where I got to feature directly after Link's COTM as the two cars are very similar and yet very different. The beauty of E30 ownership and customization. Suiting the car to your own taste and you end up with two very similar and very different cars. Its great. Looking forward to 2021, Keep those build threads updated! and more importantly, Congrats to dadsbmw for being the December 2020 Car of the Month! - Simon***

    • Background
      • I often tell people my dad bought this car new, but technically he bought it 1 year used. She was his pride and joy and he drove her everywhere. Growing up I lived with my mom in California, my dad in Colorado, and extended family right in the middle in Utah. As a result we took MANY road trips between the 3 states which gave us a lot father/son seat time together. When I was 15 I learned to drive in the e30 and had the pleasure of driving it in highschool when my dad went on work trips. As the e30 got older and went up in miles (currently sitting at almost 400k), my dad refused to buy something newer and just continued consistent maintenance to keep her on the road. Eventually in the late 2000s my father fell ill and slowly deteriorated over the next few years. When he passed in 2012 he left the e30 to me in his will, and it immediately became my daily driver. Over the previous years of my father's sickness, the e30s health had deteriorated as well, so now under my ownership it would find a new life. I've since spent the last 8 years fixing basically everything, providing some upgrades along the way, but mainly trying to keep in OEM+. Last year she received an S52 swap, which was very exciting, but frankly now that it's all finished, may have been a bit overkill. She's no longer my daily driver and I've acquired a much newer and faster car, but the e30 brings it's own magic that cannot be matched. I don't drive her as often as I should, due to a few lingering issues since the motor swap, but plan to spend quite a bit more time behind the wheel in the near future. The last thing I want to say, which should be obvious by now, is that she will never be sold. Genuine forever car.

      • Get the finer points of the swap sorted.
      • Redo the interior
      • Paint
      • MAYBE custom 2 piece bottlecaps
      • be done and love it

Great COTM, great story, and great looking car. IMO it's perfect. If I ever get another coupe the combination of lachs+silver baskets is just one of my all time fav looks.

Amazing car and great story. Big kudos for keeping your father's car in such a good condition.. Those rear seats look gorgeous for being almost 400.000 miles old. Keep up the good work!
