    Grandad-Spec '85 Slushbox ETA - Blank Canvas

Hey R3V, not a full newbie (posted a few times on the R3V FB page and am more active on the r/E30 Discord), but I think I might try my hand at this journaling thing. I've lost too many pictures to bad backups and I lurk too much on this forum anyways. Going to summarize the 4 years of ownership and track everything I do starting in 2024 onward. I bought my car toward the tail-end of 2020. COVID was still raging on, and my 2 weeks off from college had reduced my summer to randomly cycling all around the city or daily bouts of COD Warzone with the guys to keep busy. Needless to say, I needed a change.

I had my eyes on getting an E30 for quite a while, but a lot of the E30s in Canada were concentrated in BC or Ontario. Not enough yuppies in the rectangular province of SK. Saw 2 cars: 1 Alpine White '86 325E that wasn't running, and a red '87 325is with more speed holes than I knew what to do with. Then this one popped up about 2.5hrs away from me: Polaris Silver, Pacific Blue interior with comforts, 175k km, bone stock '85 325E. I was kind of uninterested since it was an auto ETA sedan, but my buddy convinced me to go and check it out. Not sure why I decided to buy it there and then, but I did. Did a crafty payment to avoid paying PST, and drove it back the 2.5hrs home. This is with my buddy's CRX Si (which is now in pieces thanks to rust). She's a Victoria car that was brought over to my province by the PO who owned it for ~3 months before I got my hands on it. No rust on the body, but I was pretty naive to think that a car this old could escape it (as I find out soon enough).

    Year 1 (2020 - 2021):
When I bought the car I was clueless about the general feedback on parts manufacturers. So when the PO handed me a URO upper strut mount and Monroe rear shocks I was like "Cool, free stuff!". The rear shocks were easy enough, but then i found out about the joys of strut inserts. I have no pictures from this time, but I do remember the feeling of using strut compressors for the first time and immediately being sketched out. But hey I'm still here.

Me and my buddy also did an (admittedly not very good) paint correction, and I drove the car in the winter for the first time. Picture was taken just after a massive snowstorm, where the family Taurus got stuck but not the E30 (Hi Dad!). She just kept on trucking. I did get some steelies with winters for her with massive 185/70R14 X-ice tires. Quite a bit of grip, but man that rear end will slide out unless you have weight in the back.

Summer came along and I had enough money from my summer job to afford my first proper upgrade: Koni Yellows with H&R OE Sports (alongside the usual maintenance of course). Back to the spring compressors I went, but the install went pretty smooth over the course of a weekend. It was here that I found where most of my rust resided (strut tube threads). Man these were crusty. I decided to soldier on, birthing a nagging voice in the back of my mind that I will eventually switch to coils and avoid this mess next time (I still have those plans!). In the same year I got a set of smileys from a seller in the R3V FB group, and lucked into getting the connectors for cheap from a guy in Alberta. Some wiring and fuse box mods later and I had functional smileys with both the high and low beams turning on (thanks Albie325 for the great write up!).

    2021-2022:
Nothing much to say about this year. Aside from maintenance, some small rust fixes - license plate holes, damage from me being a dumbass with a floor jack, license plate lights rust, trunk seal seam rust. I did reapply rockguard after treating the rust on the rockers, but my dumbass did not bother to do the whole rocker. Now I have a weirdly shaped bit of unpainted rockguard on the bottom, but I figure I'll repaint the car anyways so I'm living with it. Also some wheels and tires! RPF1s at 15x8 +28 with 205/55R15. 15mm spacer in the front (maybe could have gotten away with 12.5mm) and none in the rear. I'm anticipating once I go with coils I wont have that perch anymore and can reduce the front spacer by a bunch. As of now the fronts are right on the cusp of overtaking the fender. I did also get Euro grills to complete the front end look with the smileys.

    2022 - 2023:
Not much work done this year either. I did do the driver rear door's vapor barrier since I was having some water ingress issues. Went a little overboard to be honest, but I figure it'll stay there to the end of time, also re-greased the window frame rails. Did also replace the E30's evaporator temp switch so my high speed aux fan turns on now. But my compressor is still dead so AC will need an overhaul.
    IMG_1650 by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/200448655@N07/]

I graduated college and started my first big boy job so I've been using the E30 as a daily for the most part. General maintenance mostly for this year, and I sourced a Mtech2 wheel for pretty cheap at 350 CAD. Most of the year was paying off student loans and getting acclimatized to maybe doing a job for the next 40 years . Did take the car out to the rez where my dad was working at, about 4 hours 1 way with a bunch of gravel roads in northern SK. Car was flawless, kind of thinking I'll driver her down to BC in the 2024.

    IMG_1471 by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/200448655@N07/]

    Upcoming plans:
I got my dad's X3 to use as a daily if need be since he's got our Taurus at the rez where he works at, so I can start tackling some larger jobs now. Current list:
    - Steering rack swap (AAE 3310N)
    - AC retrofit (compressor clutch is dead, going to swap to a Sanden since I'll have it apart)
    - Brake job all around
    - Timing belt + waterpump + misc. seals + sintered cam and intermediate gears
    - Drill the trunk and mount the iS spoiler I got. Repair and repaint this beat up cowcatcher.

Not gonna lie, I may just pay a shop to repair this cowcatcher, it's pretty beat. I sanded off the old paint with an orbital, but I don't want to buy a plastic welder for what may end up being a one-time use. So I'll let someone else handle it.

Thanks for reading. I'll hope to finish the rack swap in April and have more pics and updates by then.

    most of the pics failed.
noticed the greenhouse in the back, studying ag at u of s ?

there's more of an active car scene in saskatoon than regina. for a few years there were some e30 folk up there. check some of the car clubs and social media, you'll probably be able to find a few of them.

Thanks for letting me know, I went straight to bed after posting so you can tell I was tired lmao. Pics are fixed.

I was studying engineering at USASK, you went to the same school? There's usually a C&C up at the Circle Drive Tim's but I've not seen another E30 there in forever. I see them randomly on the road moreso, kind of wondering if there's a secret club I'm not invited to.

Well you know how my car looks, give me a wave if you're ever here! I did buy the car in Regina, and the city itself has way more classic BMWs I feel. Any cool shops in the area to keep in mind if I need some work or mods done?

just check with the indies up there. here in regina alvey's is good for work on euro cars, but they don't really do anything modified. i have had custom exhaust done at odd man out, they are a subaru focused speed shop, but work on a load of platforms and have a dyno now.

edit : precision auto is really well known for euro work here but i can't afford them lol. also cws tuning is a great shop but were closed for a while, i think they have re-opened.

Appreciate it! Yea eurotec up here is who I take my car to, but Alan also doesn’t like doing any modifications. I may be looking for a shop to do my Z3 rack swap due to work hence my asking. Exceed up here is good, but they said their tech hasn’t looked at my request yet which is giving me pause.

You should add an analog clock in there. It’s plug and play for that silly digital clock that’s in there and looks 100x better

I really like an early model in that colour. Looks like a very clean car overall.

Ever thought about doing a manual swap? Old 3 and 4 speed autos are really dogs.

I swapped my M20B25 and it really transformed the car.
It was the first time I had ever taken a transmission off, and I did it in my driveway.

Thanks! I do like the Polaris silver even though it kind of blends in, it has a cool shine when polished thanks to the alu flakes. It will need a repaint eventually, it’s pretty tired.

I do have plans eventually to manual swap. It’s running pretty good and I did do a drain and fill last summer so I’m gonna keep the auto for a while. I was kinda mulling that if I do a manual swap I’ll do a 24V or N52 of the sort at the same time.

Steering Rack Swap (April 27, 2024):

Update on the rack swap, it's in!

I got started initially, then work asked me to go for field visits. Not wanting to leave the car half-disassembled I got a local shop to finish the job. Parts list:
                        • AAE 3310N rack with E36 outers
                        • New Sunsong lines with Rein reservoir
                        • New OEM steering joint giubo
Rack brings the E30 steering speed in line with my dad's X3, and this cool 330i loaner I got when my dad's car was in for work. Bimmerworld is accurate when they say this is ~2.8 turns LTL.
                        IMG_2013 by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/200448655@N07/]

One caveat, the brochure does say this one should use CHF11S. But the rack came pre-filled with ATF so I'm not sure what that was about. Had the shop flush the system and refill with DEXRON 3 and so far so good. Had an odd vibration through the steering wheel that would go up and down with revs, turns out the high pressure line and return line connections at the rack were very slightly contacting each other. Some bending by hand and the vibration is gone.

Next up is going to be the AC kit. Thinking I may go for the AC Solutions kit and swap to the late model single pressure switch setup while I'm there.

                          Miscellaneous Trip Prep:

Since I'm planning on a long road trip in August, I decided to take stock of general vehicle condition. Mainly to see if anything needed replacing and order some spare parts for the trip.

                          CPS checks (May 5. 2024):
Got to the CPS and saw a bead of silicone along the top edge and feared for the worst. Yep, I'm going to need a new CPS. Ordered a Bosch one and I'm now waiting for it. Luckily the engine harness plug cleaned up fine, that didn't stop me from getting a bunch of Junior Power Timer plugs from Mouser.

Cracked smiley reflector swap (May 5, 2024):
Continuing on with the vehicle condition, I remembered I never replaced my cracked low beam projector with the spare I had lying around. So I got around to it. Quick little disassembly and she looks pretty fresh, I am going to get new adjusters in the future, but for now this will do. You can see on the old reflector where I had to reseal the reflector with metal bonder since the old glue fell apart.

Bosch reflectors that came from Schmiedmann had the plugs adapted to the sealed beam plug from factory. Pretty cool, and would have saved me money back when I first got these smileys, but ah well.

Also new parts! AC Solutions kit should ship next week. I got the 4 seasons evaporator and the Nissens condensor for cheap locally so I tried to save some cash there.

                            Miscellaneous Trip Prep (contd.):

                            Random findings (May 10, 2024):
While I waited for the new CPS and my AC Solutions kit to ship, I set about checking the resistance on the current CPS. Came within spec, so this one with a broken plug will be converted to a spare. Just gotta remember to use a zip tie when using this one. At the same time I ended up buying some new vacuum line for the FPR and replaced the semi-tired one that was installed on the car.

                            Shock tower rust repair (May 11 - 15, 2024):
Next up was some rust repair at the rear shock towers I'd been putting off for a while. You can see the discoloration peeping through the rear shock mounts.

                            IMG_1138 by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/200448655@N07/]

Some disassembly later and you can see the damage. Not too bad considering I'd known about this since 2021.
                            IMG_2123 by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/200448655@N07/]
                            IMG_2099 by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/200448655@N07/]

Dremel work on both towers removed most of the scale and loose paint. I wasn't getting anymore off and decided to apply rust converter. Some nasty stuff, had to keep the garage door open for a while after applying.

About a day later and the surface was ready. Some self-etch primer, paint, and overrun later (I tried to get the hard to reach edges) and I think this will last.

                            Random findings (May 11 - 15, 2024):
On another note, I noticed my evap hose cover was never included with the car and the Konis had rubbed their paint clean off on the braids. Ordered one off r3v and I'll have it installed before I set out on the trip. Glad I caught it. Shock paint was repaired with a paint pen I got off Canadian Tire. Not a perfect match by any means (Ford Screaming Yellow), but it'll be facing away from me anyways :).

Going through the fuel lines yielded another surprise with my oldest line being from 1984! Basically booked it to the local PartSource the next day and got 10' of 5/16" Continental J30R9 line alongside some Glarks fuel injection clamps from Amazon. Some other lines looked to be from 2007, and another one from an unknown date leading to the cold start injector. Not worth it to run them during a long trip, so I'm setting that into my Notion calendar as a task to do.

                            Brake mishap (May 18, 2024):
Since I was done with the shock tower rust, I figured I'd do my long-overdue brake job starting from the back. Got the torque values from FCPEuro's video and sent it. So much for that. Root cause: over torque plus the copper anti-seize lubrication allowed me to neck the bolt and shear it off. Pretty straightforward.

Looking at other sources, seems the caliper carrier bolt torque is incorrect (80ft.lb in the video vs 49ft.lb from Bentley). Serves me right for not cross-referencing. At least it's a regular pitch metric bolt. Ordered a set off Amazon and it should be here on Tuesday, figures it would happen on a long weekend with everything closed! On the other hand, the caliper carriers and calipers cleaned up pretty nice considering they were under a layers of brake dust (wear your masks).

And also, don't buy your brake items way in advance and not check the package. I bought these Pagids off RockAuto last year since they were on sale. Turns out the fronts were a return scam, and someone stuffed used (well, once-installed) Textars in the box. Sigh. Got a set of Bosch BP493 off Amazon, and now this brake job has gotten way out of whack in terms of meeting my timeline.

ACSolutions kit also came in around this time. Even if the car is on jackstands on one end, I figure I may as well get started on disassembly. They forgot to add the compressor belt in the package, but one email to them and they sent it out. Now that's good service!

I just got my ACSolutions kit installed, fixing a few pesky leaks at the moment but very excited to see how well a modern compressor performs... I've always been underwhelmed with my stock R134 conversion and I blame the old compressor.
