Project: Unfinished Business? Why am I like this? A system error has occurred.

So I still haven't finished or even got my Touring running yet with the N52 - because life / time / priorities make it last on the list. It will get done, and hoping for reasons I can focus on that by the end of the year. But this story is about a car I sold 10 years ago, a red 87 325is.

To rewind... long story short, I had big plans for the car. I stripped it down to nothing and organized the parts in bags and bins. It was complete - aside from engine/trans. I had some welder friends make the engine bay smoothed with new panels and had a removable core support made. The car was to be painted and show off parts that me and a friend/partner were to make. Well, I was let's just say I was too trusting/naive and for reasons those dreams never materialized. After that, I didn't want to look at the car that was supposed to be the showcase for all of that, and needed to sell what I didn't need as those debts from the failed enterprise were too big for me. In hindsight, probably should have kept the car - because I didn't sell it for much. I ended up having to roll those debts into refinancing - but thankfully back then rates worked out for me. If I had done that first - things would have been different for the car I think.

Fast forward to 2025. So a few weeks back, I'm on facebook marketplace and I see it listed, with the wheels I knew it was my old car. Ad was like 4 months old, but it was still available - I couldn't believe it. Wheels gone, but like I said, I have hopes the new owner will sell them back to me some day. I basically bought and sold them to friends for a decade themselves - they are ARE 398 -- RS copies, not worth much - but the memories mean more to me. So I see that some bins and parts are gone, parts missing - but the owner accepted my offer. I got some extra parts in the deal - wish it just wasn't missing what it had, but for the offer I gave - it was worth it. I'll sell some stuff. I basically already zero'd out so it was free. Oh and get this --- the title? Was still in my name. Guy I sold it to had it for 5 years, never got a new title, then sold it to the new owner, never got a new title. Found that funny.

So we'll call it Project "unfinished business" -
I literally have no idea what I'm gonna do. It was free at this point.
I'm in no rush to do anything to it. I'll slowly get some things for it that it needs - like taillights, and door windows/window regulators, but again..
She's gonna sit until I really have the funds to do anything. And again, touring and other priorities come first.

    Random ideas:

    - PROBABLY STILL A NEW PAINT JOB. Cuz it is stripped to nothing. Maybe make it slick top at same time...

    - ROLLING SIMULATOR:
NO DASH CURRENTLY, BUT YEAH! No, not really.

    - SPEC-ISH E30 RACE CAR:
Just get an M20b25 + Getrag - piece it together - make it run - keep it stripped - maybe cage some day - boom, spece30?

    - SORTA RACE CAR ISH BUT COOLER:
Buy metal e30 m3 clone kit $$$$$$ - always wanted an M3, but never cared about purist things/s14 - go k20 or m62 etc?

    - RESTORE TO BETTER THAN NEW GLORY
With some OEM++ things, maybe M20 still, but euro bumbners, overpriced RARE parts, etc.

Old Picture - At my first house, now living in my third house with wife and kid... but we are thinking about moving in a few years. So who knows, this thing may not see any real progress till the next house which I'm hopeful is more than a 2 car garage?

Since this picture though... pretty much nothing has changed. All body panels I have, and were put on the car. New pictures later.

    =============

A system error does keep occurring trying to post/navigate.

Here ya go Simon. I made a thread, don't bump the touring thread - I ain't ready for the shame of not having it done... still.

That 110* 6-month summer each year really preserves the metal.

This is awesome. She's come back home finally and now you get to make a proper woman out of her.

If you want to cage it, I would cage it meow while all the windows are out. This would make the cage easier for the fabricator to install, and easier for you to paint the cage once you get it back home. Not having the wiring in the car would also help, but wouldn't be essential.

I think for a SpecE30, just buy one lol. It's cheaper to get a good condition race car than to build one from scratch.

For a swap, may I suggest an N52 swap?

Haha it does, but thankfully it was in a shop on a lift for the last 5 years. Of course rain got into it yesterday a freak downpour - but I'll get it covered / closed up. Thankfully rust isn't an issue here obviously. Likely at least POR15 the bare metal engine bay pieces etc.

That's the part, buying random e30 parts are obviously harder to find and more expensive now for stuff that is missing.

Maybe in a week or so, just imagine that but dirty and it has hood/trunk/fenders/bumper. It's not much to look at right now.

That's really the reason why I got it. Endless possibilities, but not endless money right now. Without any rubber on/in it - I'm not worried about roasting in the sun - hidden of course.. There are salvage and beat cars being parted out or have limping swaps etc. Since I sold some stuff... it is now free... when am I going to get another rolling shell again? Especially one that has some engine bay stuff done... that I owned? But don't hold your breath - may be a long time.

Someday! She's got a lot of work no matter what direction.

Yeah she's completely stripped, thankfully --- I think all wiring was untouched and in a new bin after my first cataloging of parts that came with it. Yeah, I know if I was a smart man that would be the way to go for spece30, but I also was not really looking to buy something more than what this cost me (now free).

Hahaha, maybe some day - I think everything BUT the engine choice would be on in the brainstorming list for this thing right now. I have some many different ideas for it, since I'm not going to move forward with any for so long. k20'd? m62'd? rally car? MTech 1? m3 clone? No idea.

Current State, not worth a bump to be honest... currently an art installation, I call it e30 shelf 2.0:

Leaning towards some sort of dual purpose on/off road thing for this car right now since touring will be essentially a pavement princess with maybe some spirited stuff mixed in. Also... since it is completely stripped, it would be easier to keep it a little more on the rough / ready side. I still don't care for red e30s... and it may get painted. All of this again... is a long ways away... but that's the current thoughts.

I'm just glad I could make both e30s fit for now in a small 2 car garage and there is ... some space... to work on the touring.
