I used to run Koni with mine but you will want to add a lower 16V brace or TTT pieces. While I miss my old MK I because they were so light and tossable. What I don't miss is rebuilding CV's or shifter linkages, and poor wiring.

Do you plan on upgrading to a 90 amp alternator? It will help. I think Koni still builds gas kits in 1001 F&R adjustable set up for mk I's.

Well, the little red Rabbit is definitely going to need new floor pans. Just ripped out the foam carpet pad, and there is rust in the whole flooring on both sides, in front of the cross-member that runs under the front seats. The driver side is all the way through, and the passenger side isn't far off. No big deal tho, new pans are $75 each, I have friends who can weld really well, and I probably would have done them anyway.

And I'm definitely doing coilovers, I just don't know what brand yet.

tokico shocks with skunk 2 springs is what my coils are. they are super stiff tho, I can dog leg in turns and I do it everytime I turn up my driveway. the ride is not what I would call fun, its like riding in a trampoline car, buttttt it does handel well.

Its not that vw makes bad axels or CVs, but when you lower the car it puts alot of stress on them. the stock axel has a slight downward angle (from diff towards wheel) and when you lower the car it makes it so the axel now has an upward angle, this is not how the axel and cv where built to run and the extra stress is what snaps and wears them out so fast. the vr6 does it the most because its has the most torque and hp of the 3 main engines that vw ran till mk4. (2.0, 1.8t, vr6)

I'm trying to find what will be the best coilover kit that I can get without spending a shit-ton of money, but will still get me plenty low and handle well.

Any suggestions? The H&R Cup Kit is about $600, but I don't know if it will be low enough, and that's about the most I want to spend.

no idea about the mk1 guys but i know a decent number of e36 guys run them. Ive heard issues of noise but thats about it. Im sure theyre not perfect, but worth looking into
