Thanks man! I will let you know how the V8 does once I finish the car! The V8 is just over 300lbs and the I6 is just under 300lbs, and V8 sits further back than the inline 6, so the balance should pretty good. The inline 4 in only 220 lbs, thats why it feels best to you. It should be great with a turbo, still not too much weight up front, and the engine sits far back.
The problem I see with choosing a low displacement engine when you need a lot of power is the obvious lack of torque, and lack of ability to add power without sacrificing front end weight. If your choose to go with an I6 or I4 you will not have many choices for adding power other than a turbo or supercharger(weight) with that comes and intercooler(more weight) and few other things to make everything work(even more weight). Add a turbo kit to an inline 6 and that 300lbs I6 just got heavier than a V8! An I4 turbo would be light and have some power, but it will be laggy depending on what turbo you choose and your overall power demands, and it will not have much torque. I would highly suggest a twin scroll turbo for such a small engine, they have much better response.

UPDATES: Sorry things slowed down for the holidays

I decided to use the stock gas tank, it was was lighter than the huge 25 gallon fuel safe cell, and it's mounted in a better spot. So I cut out the old battery mount, and it fits fine. I will find a new spot for the battery when we corner balance the car.

The gaping square hole where the fuel cell used to be made me sad, so i put the radiator there, and it fit great. This will take about 20 to 30lbs off the front end and give the car a better balance. I made some mounts for it and an angled undertray for the bottom to scoop up some air from under the car and to protect it from debris. I will be sticking the trans and diff cooler in the same spot back there. I made a template box to cover the top of the gaping hole, to seal it off. But I want to see how it works as is before I put in any more effort. If it runs hot I have options: I can make the cover and seal it off, I have room to add more fans, I can make vents out the license plate area, or I can run NACA ducts in the fenders and run tubes with fans though the rear seat back and into the trunk area. I have a few options, but I want to see how it runs first to get a better estimation of how much more cooling I will need.

I am in the process of making e46m3 hubs/brakes/CAs work on the front, they are an easier design to work with that a solid strut/hub like e30s. The real reason I'm using it is that I picked up a set of e46m3 hubs, brakes, and CAs with only 17k on them for $200 a few days ago. I was planning on using the e46 CAs and reaming out the mounting point on the e30 hub to make it work, but using the complete e46 setup will take less time and is a more practical setup to work with. I will be at groma fab soon to see if I can make a custom strut tube from what tubes Ireland has next door for their coilover kits. I should find something that works.

Thats all for now, I will get some pics up soon!

Yea it is, give me some ideas please! The radiator wont be there and I really have nothing to put there. I will probably put some black mesh to protect everything. There are a LOT of little things that need attention, but at this point if I pay attention to all the cosmetic details it will be another year before this car is finished. I want to drive this thing already! I've been working on it since november of 2009, it's time to finish this thing already.

              Picture time!

              Radiator under tray:
I started by making the "tray" part out of 040 steel bent down at angle in attempt to scoop up air from under the car. Then I made two 1/2 inch square steel tube frames at both openings and welded them to the pan. I installed rivnuts every few inches in the tubing. Then I made a frame of the existing tubing out of 1/2 inch steel strap and drilled out holes where the rivnuts where located. Then I sandwiched(mmmm) the mesh between the steel strap frame and the tube frame, cut the edges and mounted fans.

              Steel and mesh sandwich:

Made some cuts for better airflow:

The tray from underneath with fans mounted up:

I attached it to the exhaust sheild with more rivnuts

              Trunk is getting there:

              Radiator mounts:

Mounted all the pumps with retaining rings welded to plates:

              Fan mounts:

              Oil cooler mounts:

Twistlock plugs for the harness and making the battery thru firewall connection:

              Messing around with wheel fitment:

              Random shots:

Most cars are designed to stay cool in traffic when they have hot exhaust blowing on the radiator. That can be a hot situation too. I don't quite know if my setup will stay cool enough or not. If it runs hot, I have many options with the setup. I can vent from the windows or fenders to the trunk, cut out the license plate area for more flow, eliminate the lower flow by blocking off the mesh screens or just add more fans At most drifting events we take runs for about 30 seconds to a minute and then sit it line with a bunch of cars, not exactly your typical racetrack conditions. Many drift cars that have rear mounted radiators and work just fine. I many have a few bumps along on the way because I've never done this before, just give me some time and I will get it working right.

Yea its got a little south of the border flavor in those pics! That's just a test fit to see what it looked like and to find out what offset range I really want to be in. That pic has both front and rear spacers bolted together, it's ridiculous. I will get it right before I order wheels.

depending on the CFM i would think the fans would could keep you cool while waiting in line for your next run. plus the length of the pipe the coolant has to travel, heat will be dissipated there too.
how about putting some rubber mounts or bushings on the radiator mounts so there is no chance of vibration causing Alu welds to crack? (just a suggestion)

putting some kinda shrouding from the inlet air scoop (thing where you have your two small fans mounted) to the radiator would help with directing air flow through the radiator making your design more efficient too.
