Maybe I'll bond it in there with something and then spray it. Still considering it, but I have to get the manifold and everything under/around it back together before I worry about anything else.I was going to do that, I had a piece of aluminum cut out and everything, but the body shop fabricator said it will slowly vibrate through my paint and when the aluminum touches the steel it begins to corrode. You should be able to do it ok with bed liner, I just didn't wanna have to replace the plate in 4-5 years. Ill look around the shop and see if I still have the piece.
To those that don't know, we hooked the battery the other day and fried the entire length of wire going to the oil level sensor on the pan. Have to run a new wire and a new connector, and we had to pull the manifold and almost all of the lower harness apart before we could find it.Comment

I was thinking make it out of 18ga steel and then use a few screws with spacers below it to attach it. Bedliner it before it goes in place. Make it so it is a close fit to the area, but not so close as to touch.I was going to do that, I had a piece of aluminum cut out and everything, but the body shop fabricator said it will slowly vibrate through my paint and when the aluminum touches the steel it begins to corrode. Ouch that sucks any Idea what caused it.

Using spacers sounds like a good idea. Maybe get it flush with the lip coming up from the frame rail?
That does suck. You sure it was limited to the oil level wiring?turk@gutenparts.com

Mine did the same thing the first time I hooked my battery up. I still have the harness hanging on my wall as a reminder to double and triple check my work. Mine burned way back into the harness under the e34 cover I was using at the time.To those that don't know, we hooked the battery the other day and fried the entire length of wire going to the oil level sensor on the pan. Problem solved, we discovered that we had attached the main ground from the E34 harness (the 2 brown wires connected to a ring terminal) to the power distribution block rather than grounding it to the chassis. Apparently a few others have done this, as well. A large self-tapping screw and a clean bare metal spot on the firewall fixed that, and it will still be hidden by the M3 covers.
When the new connector gets here from Blunt, we will run and terminate a new ground down to the oil level sensor, get the harness, manifold and everything underneath it reinstalled, and then we should be able to fire the motor.Comment

Yoshi, it doesn't even matter. We don't live in the rust belt. Unless you leave your car sitting in a field under a tree for 10 years, it's not really going to rust.
as far as the wires, you do have to be careful because the later sheathing BMW used in the E34/E36 was kinda crappy. It tends to fade so that red and brown look the same. It's best to pull back the harness a bit to get a look at a cleaner bit of wire.Comment
