FredK I know that this thread is 4 years old, but I just read it in it's entirety and wanted to extend a compliment.
This may be the best start to a build thread that I've seen. Kudos on the details and candor, there are very few craftsmen out there that can do it right AND are willing to share.
You are a great resource for for reliable information and have a great combination of intelligence, technical skill, and andventurous spirit.
            Thanks
            Andy

Thanks Andy. Towards the end I just wanted the project to be finished, so I didn't take many pictures.

About the only things I've changed would be the VANOS hub, and the braking setup. I will probably update the braking setup sometime soon.

What was up with the VANOS? Is there an upgrade to be done or did it fail?

There is a fairly well-documented issue where the oil pump hub breaks at its interface to a mating part. This happened to me, and I addressed it by replacement of the broken part and replacement of the mating part, the oil pump disc. There's a lot more information available on Beisan Systems website (www.beisansystems.com) about the causes of the failure, as well as replacement parts designed to reduce the probability it happens again.

I'm familiar with the oil pump failure. I didn't know the vanos seals were crap too.
