This is a HUGE amount of stuff you're doing. Nice work!

About how long did it take you to remove the AC pieces that you did?

lol thanks man. It feels like a lot of work to me, but compared to some of the guys on here do swaps & what-not, I feel like my build is weak! The AC took no time at all after getting the radiator and clutch fan off. Probably an 1hr max.

Good news. I found a guy here in town(Head Solutions) who will lap my valves & ports, deck the head, and hot tank it along with my manifold for less than $200 bucks. not bad! he does head rebuilds fr Dreyer & Reinbold BMW so I'm guessing his work is pretty decent. I'm gonna disassemble the eccentrics and cam soon. can wait to do more! also buying MarkD chip & Bosch 19 injectors from Dixon on here friday. more updates later.

So call me crazy but after doing a little cleaning in the engine bay tonight, I think I may get rid of a couple things on the passenger side... IE the mounting points for the washer tank. It needs a respray anyways since the paint has started to chip off near the stock exhaust manifold. I'm thinkin white high heat engine enamel. I can't really do anything with the driver's side right now and I don't feel like pulling the power steering reserve, coolant reserve, abs module, etc... The passenger side would be convenient though! Thoughts?

^^ I was already planning on doing this myself. Depends if your worried about needing washer fluid. If you take it out, do it properly though like you said, grind off the tabs and re-spray everything. Unfortunately for the drivers side there is not much to be done unless you want a m42 rad to eliminate the coolant res.

Honestly, not as easy as I was expecting. I used my dremel(as I had expected) and cut the "onlyuseonceOEMbolts" on it. After that, it took my 16" 8lb sledge and the biggest steel punch I could buy(that would fit) to hammer the two out. Held the cast steering link a vice to do it. pain in the ass but if you don't get impatient and use good leverage, it will go more smooth.

to give you a better idea. this is the punch I used first. 1/4" DASCO Pro Grade #8 6series stainless steel pin punch.... and this is after it bent for the 3rd time. After that I bought a 3/8ths in the same grade and series. did the trick after 3 or 4 blows with my sledge.

Nice build! If it's not too late, I would highly recommend upgrading to the M3 offset CABs, your car will feel 10x better with them instead of the floppy stock e30 versions. Given the awesome upgrades you've done so far, I'd say they're damn near mandatory :)

Thanks! Here Ill post it again for ya. ;) They're not offset but they're made of Ertalon. Practically the same density as Delrin. I chose not to go offset since I don't see high speed tracks very often. I usually just hit tight turns in autox. I gotta say I can't fuckin wait to test out this rack and new steering upgrades. Compared to my OEM shitty crap, the sun will be shinin! Having a linear steering rack does slighty make me nervous when I hit the highway though. Hopefully it wont be too sensitive.

Well, tonight was productive since I need to get the head to the machine shop in the morning.

I started off where I last left with the timing covers. Once they were off, I checked the tension on my timing belt since I was curious. Lets just say.... it was certainly time for some maintenance....

After pulling the timing belt off, I worked on the exhaust manifold. Bit of advice for you first timers, take the manifolds off with the head. You will find that removing the manifolds with the head on a bench much easier since the lower manifold bolts are easily accessable.

Now that the headbolts were removed in order, its ready to be pulled...

Now, the for the bottom end. I am pleased to see the cylinder walls are still in excellent shape. The pistons, however, had quite a bit of carbon buildup. I will be working on cleaning these up tomorrow afternoon.

                              Cylinder 1&2

                              Cylinder 3

                              Cylinder 4

                              Cylinder 5

                              Cylinder 6

Now let's have a look at those- fuck.... hold on, forgot to move the oil pipe.

Now let's have a look at those valves.

                              Cylinder 1

                              Cylinder 2

                              Cylinder 3

                              Cylinder 4

                              Cylinder 5

                              Cylinder 6

Turns out, I also had an exhaust leak... Might explain all the chipped paint on the passenger frame rail...

Now, let's remove that cam gear and oil shaft plugs.

Used cardboard as a spacer. Don't lay the valves on flat surface gentlemen.

Rocker arms and Rocker shafts removed.

                              Cam Removed.

                              Cam seal removed.

                              On the agenda for tomorrow...

Drop off head & manifold at machine shop.
Stop by dealership & pick up new cam seal(unless its already in my gasket kit).
Stop by ace hardware & pick up new exhaust manifold nuts for headers.
                              Order exhaust wrap.
Clean Pistons & outside of short block.

                              That's all for tonight. Goodnight R3v. -B

I like all of this. I can swap a motor, but I can't pull one apart and expect to put it back together the right way.

                                Again, I like this.
