    Rcav's 86 325 es

Name is Mike and I'm gonna put up some photo's of my buddy's 86 that he got about a week ago and since I'll be doing most / all the wrenching on it, (till he learns) figured this would be a great place to post it.

So it was March 10, 2011, and Cav calls and says, "what do you know about e30's". Me being a VW guy, say "there solid and timeless". Fasts forward 24 hours later and the car is his. Looked good while we checked it out in the rain!

Yeah it dind't have a front valance, but the pop out rear windows and diving boards made the car. Not to mention the blue leather with Sport seats were classy as hell. The headlights didn't match, but those will get replaced by a new french set later on.

This is a daily driver first and a lesson in car repair second. So on to some more photo's!!

So the interior was gutted to see why the carpet at the petals was wet.

yup that bracket rusted straight through.

    Rears looked decent.

Then, the rest of the hidden gems revealed themselves to us.

WARNING: THE BELOW PICTURES ARE GRAPHIC YOU MAY WANT TO LOOK AWAY!

This one is our biggest hurdle as it goes throught the fender / firewall right onto the brake pedal and clutch.

SO we have our work cut out for us. We have a body guy who will be cutrting out and replacing the driverside portion of the firewall and gusseting for strength as well as replacing the accelerator pedal bracket on the floor. This will happen over the next couple of weeks.
In the meantime the sway brackets and bushings have been ordered and some other trim items.

The car whent to Bimmerworks in West Chester, PA and they gave it a good once over and said the motor and drivetrain is solid and all recent service has already been done. So since it's a daily first we'll work with and make it a fun little car.

    Plan's:
Repair Rust (hole's) get it water repellant!
replace tail light gaskets as well as passenger side tail light.
Clean up the two exterior rust spots on belt trim passenger side
    Polish the diving boards
Front valance (going to Guten on Thursday to see whats available)
    H&R Race Cup Kit
    Roof Rack
    French headlights with smiley's
    Wheels, ideally some Alpina reps
Drive it like we stole it!!!

I found some large rust holes and about a buck 50 in coins after I took my carpet out. Not enough to buy a welder unfortunately.

They all have rust. It's just a matter of how hard you want to find it.

Since this rusty 'ol girl is mine, I figured I should chime in. Mike great job on the post.

It's gonna be the road to recovery for her that is gonna get me prepped for future BMW endeavors. And even though I only got to drive her a few days in the neglected condition that she was in, this machine is fun to drive. I cant wait til she is a lil more prepared for the drives to come.

        Now back to eliminating rust!

Nice to meet you guys. Love it when VW guys get into e30s. I wish I would have gotten a picture of the creative seating arrangement you guys had yesterday.

                See you soon.

Thanks Levent, I thought it was pretty cool sitting inthe back seat with no front passenger seat in! Felt like Ms. Daisy being driven around.

So we've decided that we are going to tackle the rust and welding ourselves, since its a daily and we'll learn alot this will be a great platform.

Going to pick up this welder as it will mostly be sheetmetal, anything structural I'll have someone more qualified do it.

For $330 it will pay for itself after just the firewall.

front delete and roof rack installed, gotta put the wood on the rack.

Here is the next stumbling block. Cav found this yesterday when talking to a bodywork guy. Gonna need some patching and gusseting for this. Maybe see if we can find a parts car in a junkyard and just cut out the whole spring pad area and weld an new section in.

If anyone has and recommendations, other than drive it into a lake feel free to post up.
                    Mike

The rack was found on this link:

You can find it on ebay, very inexpensive like $60 shipped to your door.

do a search for Gutter Grabber on ebay or amazon.
The bars are only about 1/2" hollow metal. Not the toughest, but it will hold a cooler or wheel if need be.

                            Parts came in!
H&R Sports with Billie Sports front and rear. Also sprung for the Install/mounting kit from Turner MS with the Repair Shop lifetime warranty rear shock mounts. This car is a daily driver and will never see an AutoX so no need for the crazy expensive mounts.

Tomarrow we are meeting up with Faststatus to get some sheetmeatl to patch up the rust. It's all coming together!

So we got some more work done. Met up with Faststatus and got the sheetmetal out, only to find there was hidden rust on the peice we cut out. Oh well. We did get a chance to clean up and paint all the front trim, the kindneys, grilles, bumper strip, bumper shrouds etc. Also did a slight bumper tuck, the shocks had foam in them which was pretty weird. All the trip was cleaned up and shot with Plasti-Dip. It's a rubberised aerosol spray that leaves a nice finish that is pretty durable and can be peeled off a smooth surface like a sticker if you no longer want it.

                              Before:

                              After:

                              During:

Also got the new shifter knob and boot on

Finished the front, came out decent for a total of $12 in 2 cans of Plasti-Dip. This is a DD and not a show or reto car. Way too much rust for that, so we are just trying to make it look respectable.

Also got the new rear suspension in, and got the fronts removed. We couldn't get the old insert out, so thats off to Bimmerworks who's gonna help us out. 15mm Drop HAts ordered as well, should be all buttoned up by the end of next week along with all the trip being recoated on the sides and rear.
                              Mike
