    Roysneon's touring- Maintenance and mods

This is mostly just a way for me to keep track of the progression of my car, however slow and boring it may be. The car is a daily driver and I work shift work. Combine that with my work space (my dad's garage) being an hour's drive away makes getting work done a bit difficult.

Backstory on the car (Cool story bro/ tl;dr warning) :

I regularly check the local online classifieds for any BMW's or BMW parts. It's served me well to make a habit of doing so a few times a day as I've grabbed some great deals that way. One day after working an overnight 11-7 shift I come home, completely exhausted and as I'm lying in bed I see a late model E30 for sale, so I opened the ad. As soon as I did I see that it's a touring. What? Really? At this time I already had one E30 that was stored away awaiting suspension rebuild and I had just bought a crappy daily (04 Neon). At the encouragement of my GF I decided to go check it out. I slept for 3 hours and then went to go check it out. Once I saw it and got talking to the owner I knew I wasn't leaving without it. I did, however try to haggle with him as any self respecting car buyer would do. We eventually agreed on $2500 and he'd install his M-tech I wheel; he made sure to let me know that he had 2 other people who had cash in hand waiting if I didn't give him something. Left him with a deposit and went to work on 3 hours sleep and being more excited about a car than I have been since I was 16 with my first. It was about a week before I could come out and pick up the car after that as the buses don't run out as far as the seller's house and my GF doesn't drive so I had no way to get me there, and the car's back.

    /cool story bro

    So about the car:
    1993 318i touring
    M40 :(
    RHD British import
    surface/panel rust
    Smiley ellipsoidal headlights
    working headlight leveling system
File folder full of maintenance records since new
Crappy front lowering springs, stock rears

Day I sealed the deal/left the deposit on it:

Tail lights needed to go, and there was some pretty shitty rust on the hatch and pass side door. From the plate filler area down was mostly made of body fill as with the upper rear corner of the left rear door.

Some photo's before I got anything done to it:

I had blacked out the grilles ( I now want to go back to stock) and changed over to stock tails by this pic

Finally got my 14" weaves on

Can see the rust spots on the doors and fender in these pics, also the stupid hood pins the PO installed. Drilled holes in a good condition sterlingsilber hood :hitler:

These are what my rear subframe bushings looked like. I didn't cut them away from the outer sleeves or anything, they were just that dried out/ripped up.

    Replaced them with:

    Also added H&R Race springs:

Still had reverse rake, was not happy with the front ride height so:
    15mm drop hats

Need some new pics of the stance with the drop hats and some other stuff I picked up when I was at Gutenparts earlier in the month.

Oh and yes, I put the car to work:

        Plans include:
        4 new brake dust sheilds
        Wheel bearings
        pads/rotors
        Bilstein sports (already have rears)
        GC conversion kit
        flush brake fluid
        Motorswap?
Refinish and buy tires for 15" weaves

The car needs new dust sheilds as they're all really crispy and the rears won't hold the e brake shoe pins in place.... I'm going to load the new shields/bearings/coils on my spare front strut tubes/rear TA's and then install it all along at once as well as the poly RTABs. A buddy of mine already wants my current suspension so that will pretty much pay for the coils.

Took some pics with a friend today that can show the most recent updates

Center caps are back on, I removed the extended wheel studs as they really weren't used or needed. You can see the front wheel gap is diminished after the drop hats

Here you can kinda see the ZHP knob and suede Matt B shift boot.

iS lip. Chrome kidneys and iS skirts should be purchased next week.

Yaaay I just wanted to find this thread again, I just ordered up the rear wheel bearings, dust shields, front Bilsteins, new pads&rotors all around and a couple other maintenance parts for this and for my M50 swap car. Looking forward to having a functioning emergency brake, quiet rear wheel bearings, and matching brakes.

In the mean time, some new pics?

I'm excited. Suspension will be pretty much done when I get these parts (from Guten of course), next will be either body/paint or motor swap. Either M20, M42 or M50. Just not the M40! I'm kinda temped to put my M10 in it, I don't like the M40 at alll.

Doesn't it though! That's what I should have done with my early model 318i instead of the M50 swap. Keeps the M10, likely lighter even with the turbo, ic, piping, etc. and much more fun to blow up

Someone I know bought a late 318i to strip so I may try to get the M42 from him on the cheap as it needs profile gasket and head gasket done. I'd love to tear that all down, reseal it, check the bearings and then a couple bolt ons/chip and I'm thinking I'd be satisfied for a DD and still get good fuel milage out of it.

Finally new shocks and brakes came in and I got them on.

Not much to see, New Bilstein sports, Zimmerman rotors, new rear swaybar links, and Rouge Engineering RSM's.

Looks soo good with new parts on there :)

                  Before it all went on

I love how the mount nuts are on the bottom, great for a touring where you have to tear apart the rear carpets, speakers, seatbelts, etc. to get to them.

Soon time for winter tires. I'm thinking I'll be swapping back to the "i" lip for the winter as the winter tires aren't as tall as the balloon Michelins that are currently on.

Yeah still have them, was thinking about plastics for early, too but decided on euros. If you're going to be near Halifax or Windsor area let me know and I'll see if we can get together or I can always make another day trip.

Would you mind doing a writeup on how you installed the rear shocks? Most importantly how you removed all the trunk lining to get to the rear shock tower. This is something im going to have to do in a couple months and would love a heads up.

Nice buy man! Love the right hand drive! A touring e30 is definitely going to be my next e30. And you should go with a 24v swap no question.
