Pitchblack Motorsports Rally e30 318i (now with M50) - and some Porsche 924S stuff.
anyhow, ripped the ignition apart tonght, in the dark, in the driveway, with a flashlight.
Looks like it's the switch that's bad, because if I manually turn it I still get nothing other than some lights coming on at odd places. Soooo....time to get a new one.
Also looks like someone "fixed" it before since there are some globs of solder in there on one of the contacts and it looks like some of the wiring insulation is melted.
Also took the opportunity to remove the steering lock (not needed!) and switch the lock cylinder to match my door locks.
I'll check with Spencer. You want me to bring all the m42 stuff up next event?
hmm...not sure if I'm gonna have room in the car since my dad is coming along for one of the days. I may hit crazy ray's this friday or saturday though so maybe we can meet up.
Got an ignition tumbler/wiring/switch by any chance? The red part on the wiring end of the ignition that plugs into the big plug on the top of the steering column? My ignition is broke.....
i saw you cruise through the pits as we were walking around, nice. :p
lol, did you see me bumper-check the other rallycross e30 when he was sitting at the gas pump admiring the cars? haha....it's tradition tht the metal-bumper e30s bumper-check each other whenever possible.
So results are up and I really blew it on my last run, with 3 cone hits dropping me to 4th in class.....behind 3 rx-7s, shocker. I was 10 seconds off the leader in the morning session, but over 20 seconds back in the afternoon. Only 11 seconds out of 2nd though.....

A few minor things tonight. First checked various things regarding the lack of starting. Battery still at full charge, so it's either the ignition switch or the solenoid. After pulling the switch out it was clearly the culprit, as it had been "repaired" with some sloppy soldering by some previous owner and the post for one of the wires was loose and wobbly. Once I pulled it off the housing literally fell apart, scattering all the pieces on the ground. Guess that will be replaced, lol.
While I was in there I disabled the steering wheel lock and changed the lock cylinder so my ignition key matches the door key. Only issue is I only have ONE of that key, so I need to get copies made. Apparently that can't be done at any key place....they don't have the right blanks....so I guess I have to go get raped by the dealer to do it :(
Getting the lock cylinder back in was alot of fun too, trying to get the little plastic cup and the spring to line up, and slot the assembly in. But it's done now (hopefully works normally).
While I was in there did some cleaning up, pulling all the under-dash wiring for the long-gone cruise control. Not saving much weight, but at least that's less crap to have to diagnose when electrical issues come up.
