I wasn't very surprised when I saw my wheel wells with the wheels/subframe off. Apparently they really are one of the e30 weak spots. Being driven in the snow for who knows how long, they really took a beating. The driver side can be saved according to my friend but the passenger needs to be replaced completely. It's rotten to the point of no return all the way up to the gas cap. Driver side has already begun.

At this point of the build, I am well over my intended budget but hey, do it once, do it right. Enjoy the rust.

Great day! Went to pick up the rear subframe, trailing arms and crossmember from sand blasting. They look great. Obviously they aren't perfect as they are 20 years old but once they are painted, they'll be much better looking than rusty and old.
Just waiting for my friend to finish painting a car in the paint booth, then they'll get painted black with a tough clear.

My Z3M Diff gasket was placed with silicone. Brand new copper washers on the bolts and drain plugs. AKG bushing pressed in. I searched around online and saw that 45NM is a good number for the torque on the bolts/plugs. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Any reason that you're not powder coating them pieces?
May I also suggest reinforcing the sway bar mounts on the front subframe. Along with adding a bar between the trailing arms to make an "a" frame.

I wish I could powder coat but I dont speak to my contact anymore.

As for reinforcing the sway bar mounts.. I'd need your guidance on how to do that and also was thinking about adding a bar between the trailing arms.

Any suggestions on how to do both of those things?
                    Thanks

AKG sells the sway bar kit to reinforce it. I'm pretty sure its peanuts. I'm also sure you could make your own since its not to hard.
As for the trailing arms. Just add a bar in between. I believe the MZ3 come that way from factory? I could be wrong.
Have you thought about sending them out to get done? Im not sure what shipping to the US would be. But contact dave@renewedfinishes.com

I just looked at the AKG website for the sway bar reinforce and I'm probably going to make the plates. Very easily.
As for the trailing arms, I believe you're right that Z3M came with the bar.
I'm going to tackle making mine the same way.
Powder coating can be here locally. Shipping to the US will be mad expensive, especially with the weight and length. I'll have them painted. No biggy.

Off the record.. Do you know if Z3M half shafts are shorter than E30 half shafts? I put my out put flange on my Z3M diff and they stick out more than the stock ones.

Welding a bar into your trailing arms? Bro...do you even drift?

Bar is a bit much but be careful it doesn't foul the filler neck or anything else around them!

Front subframe you can easily make up reinforcement plates for the engine mounts and swaybars. http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-40...ement-kit.aspx

I also did these while I was at it

All easily done and free if you have some steel and a welder.

I already have the rear sway bar reinforcement tabs because I bought the car with ST bars on it and the tabs come with the kit.
As for the front, AKG sells them for 10$ but somehow they want 35$ to ship to Canada. They could simply send them in a basic envolope for less than 2$ but ill make my own.
