Alright so progress on the '02 is going to slow down temporarily, but it's all for good reason. It's time for a two-part story.


Part one:
So my dad's best friend has a friend (confused yet?) who's name is Michael. Michael just moved from my hometown up to Anacortes Washington. They are wealthy people, so they bought a really nice house up on a hill with a gorgeous view. The house that they moved into was previously owned by a Mercedes Benz mechanic, who actually built the house. He built a huge workshop inside the house where he worked on cars. He had a nice german lift in there (Nussbaum) and left it in there after he moved out, so Michael was left with it. Michael does not work on cars, so he had no use for it. He did, however, leave his Mazda Miata commuter/weekend car down at his old house in my hometown and was originally planning on having it shipped up to his new house. My dad had an interesting idea, and offered to tow the car up there himself in exchange for the lift. Since Michael wanted to get rid of the lift, and the idea seemed more simple than other options, he agreed! The journey was set.

My dad, his best friend and myself strapped the Miata on a trailer, and headed north as soon as I got off work on a Monday night, so about 10pm. Anacortes is 1100 miles north of us, so about a 24 hour drive each way. We arrived at about 9pm the next evening and were eager to check out the lift:



The next day we got up early and started taking it apart. Within about 6 hours of taking our time, we had it taken down and ready for the trek home on the trailer:



Everything went smoothly and we embarked on our journey home the next morning. All in all the trip was awesome, the scenery was absolutely amazing and we got some quality dude hangs in. We stopped in Astoria Oregon on the way home as well which was an added bonus. Rad little town.

Part two:
I've been tossing the idea around of finding my own shop space in San Luis Obispo, which is where I live. I was never really serious about it until recently when I had the sudden motivation to really pursue it. There was one listing on Craigslist which had been posted for a while which I always kept in mind but never really did anything about. I finally called up the guy and he ended up being rad, and I kept getting more and more excited about the possibilities of having my own shop space. I was eating at taco bell and came across this:



And that was when I decided I just need to bite the bullet and go for it. So I did. I met up with the landlord and we sealed the deal. This 800 sq.ft. warehouse is now mine starting tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited:



I plan on doing all sorts of things here. Mainly work on cars, building custom furniture/tables and whatever else I feel like getting crafty on and hopefully find ways to make enough money to pay for the shop space every month. The possibilities are endless, and I'm just stoked to have this within biking distance from my house.

The best part is, our new lift will be going in my shop. My dad and I both think it just makes more sense to have it in there. So that's another awesome plus on the whole situation.

So the next few weeks will be spent getting everything set up how I want it, I'm going to invest some money in tools, work tables, equipment, etc. Then I can get back to work on the 2002!

Make sure you use some sort of pre-stain product. Pine is one of the worst woods to stain ever. I can dig it man.

Completely unrelated to my 2002 build, but I had to take a little break. My girlfriend just bought a nice new couch and it's basically a perfect scratching post for our idiot cat so I had to find a solution. I thought it'd be fun to take some scrap metal from around the property my dad lives on and build a table to cover up the area of the couch that he (the idiot) was terrorizing. This was a really fun project, as I basically went into it with no set plan, I just built it however I felt like at the moment. I knew the general dimensions it needed to be to cover the cushion, but the rest was up to my imagination at the time.

The couch is also next to the walkway into the kitchen, which is why it is triangular shaped. It leaves plenty of room for people to walk in and out of the kitchen.

Here is the frame of it. It is all scrap metal that I found, ground down to bare metal and welded together. I made little swirlys in the tops of the round pipe on the corners haha:




I then spent $30 at home depot on wood and clear coat. Cut some wood, sprayed some clear and ended up with this:






Here is the couch before the table. You can see at the back of the cushion where our cat started tearing shit up:

We're staining the wood sometime this week and then it'll be done!

Inspiring work man. You can really see your skill progress through the thread. This thread has given me some motivation to dive into a few projects I've been hesitant to start. Keep up the awesome work!

Have you thought about going the e21 front brake setup? or converting the rear to disc brakes? e21 i am going to do as its very reasonable even to buy all new parts or stupid cheap if you recondition second hand parts.
