I would rather have a 10 inch shock for 9.5 inches of travel and be forced to raise the car, than to have the shock be the limiting factor on travel. If the limit straps break, and the suspension pulls on the 8.5 shock, then you will ruin them real fast. Of course there are other problems with using the 10 inch shock and having more droop, like CV axle travel (my problem right now)
If you wanna get REALLY crazy you could make your own shock towers to raise the mount point a few inches. I've been seriously considering cutting off the top of the shock towers HIK Fabrication made me for this very reason.
Edit: Upon further measurements, I'm almost certainly going to be raising the shock towers. Dangit!
Edit #2: Bilstein 5165 shocks have a 9.4" travel with a 14.2/23.6, and a 9.8" 14.6/24.4. And they are bushing mounted so they might even fit right into the stock mounts! http://www.shockwarehouse.com/news/bilstein_5165.cfm
