    My E30 LS1 Drift Car

Hi I'm John, and I love to drift. I want to take drifting as far as I can, and this is the car I'll be starting with. A 1987 325e. For the early stages of drifting the car I used an S52 from a 98 z3m, now that I have begun competing in pro am events in an effort to attain my Formula D license I have chosen to go with an LS1 swap.

    The Rebuild:

Custom Fabrication done by Kelly Wolfe and James Allen at Insane Innovations: https://www.facebook.com/InsaneInnovationsAZ
Built by Rudy, Brandon, and Grinder at Streetlife Performance AZ

Power provided by an LS1/T56 combo
    Formula Drift regulation cage
    Tubbed front and rear end
    Fuel Safe Fuel Cell
    Ground Control coilover suspension
    DTM Fiberwerkz body components
    STR 514 17x9 +20
    Achilles Radial

    Kicking off the 2014 Season!!

    The S52 came from a 1998 z3M with 80,000miles pretty much complete. I'm staying OBD2 for simplicity.

I have always wanted to do this, cleaned up the zf reeeeaalll niceeee.

Refreshed the motor, seals, spark plugs, waterpump, gaskets, clutch and flywheel, etc. I was extremeley surprised witht the fitment of the ebay headers I got. The gaskets were garbage but thats expected, I already had oem gaskets for this. They cleared the engine mount, sway bar and lolipop with miles of room. Dropping in the motor was a suprisingly easy process. I used the slots on the subframe for the condor motor mounts which seems to be what everyone had to do. After about 20 minutes or so it was all in.

Good stuff Jezza. It went to a good home.

I was wondering where one of my many previous cars ended up, what did you give Andre for it if you don't mind me asking? I almost bought it back but knowing what I sold the rolling chassis to him for, I couldn't justify what he was asking when I saw it for sale (non-functional m20, etc).

I'm sure I'll run into you. What are the plans for exterior? Complete the LSB?

Thank you! I'll tell you that I definatly did not pay near the price posted on craigslist ;)

So once the car is running, which should be very soon probably a week or two, I want to work on more suspension components then a cage. After that I'll look into fixing up the exterior. Not sure what I want to do but LSB is definatly an option.

Good. But also makes me wish I had tried harder haha.

Good plans, you should sign up on azbmw.org if you haven't already.

How did you get your H&R springs so low on your daily?

What is the typical cost of swapping an S52? I see you're staying OBD2 "for simplicity", but every swap I've seen, they convert to OBD1. What are the advantages of staying with OBD2? Isn't that the diagnostics system? Still learning here.

They are the race springs which drop about 2 inches.

I would say a safe estimate would be around 4-5k. As for obd1 vs obd2 this thread will have infinitley more information than I can give you:http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=230879

But essentialy my reasoning for staying obd2 is because I didnt want to deal with adding obd1 parts and sensors, which add to the cost of the swap. All I have to do for obd2 is remove some systems in the DME.

Thanks dude, after reading through that thread, it makes me wonder why people swap to OBD1 in the first place. If I were to do this swap, I would stay OBD2 as well. Look forward to watching this progress, this might be on my to-do list down the road.
