    76 2002 M20 Turbo

Everything here is getting pulled from Stanceworks. Felt I should put the build up here as well. The plan at the start was to run a NA M20 with a different cam and other odds and ends. Then I decided a turbo would be more fun and have been throwing money at that since.

    Hello all,

I have a 1976 BMW 2002 Sahara. Plans for the year are to lower the car, new engine and transmission and all new suspension. The interior of the car is already in really good shape so that is going to stay the same. Hopefully will be able to finish everything this summer while school is out.

    Already done:
    BMW 14" Basketweaves
    Air dam and euro bumper
    Recaros / new interior
    Wilwood Brakes
    Steel Brake Lines
    Sway bars

    Plans:

    Engine: M20B27I, 36b injectors
Turbo: Garrett GT3071R, Tial 38mm Wastegate
    Transmission: Getrag 260
Suspension: Groundcontrol coilovers, urethane bushings, ST anti-sway bars
    Exhaust: Magnaflow exhaust
Lights: New headlights and euro turn signals
Brakes: Wilwood 4 piston rear brakes
Chip: W.A.R Chip and MAF conversion

Few photos from a BMW meet:

    Update:
Struts sent out to be converted
    Picked up M20B27i
Upgrading rear brakes to 4 piston Wilwood discs

Update: Received my shorty headers from IE, motor mounts are in from Sin City BMW. Block is nearing completion and getting painted. Going to be sending out my engine cover and intake to Renewed Finishes to be powder coated in silver with BMW in black. Some photos:

Will be using urethane bushings from Ireland Engineering

Sent out my valve cover and intake manifold out for powder coating and just got finished by Renewed Finishes. Look great, can't wait to get them back.

Received powder coated valve cover and intake manifold from Renewed Finishes today (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Renew...60775133986357) Came out great, here are some photos I took when I opened. More will be up soon.

So I received my coilovers from Ground Control. Going to get them mounted up later today.

So the plan for the car has changed, going to be running a Garret GT3076 turbo. Finally have the car back on the ground after adding coilovers and replacing all bushings with new urethane ones. Here are some photos on the ground for the first time in months.

Teaser of what is to come:

Got my turbo, MLS head gasket, ARP Studs and urethane motor mounts today.

    Update today.

Haven't done much the past 2 months really due to school and busyness. The plan is to move the car this Saturday to my buddies place who is helping me build the car and is helping with the fab work. Engine has been rebuilt with new head gasket and ARP studs. Should be running around 10-13lbs so no real need for the MLS gasket at this point. Been slowly piecing everything together, hopefully will be done in January if I spend enough time on it. Below are some photos.

    Back together

If I don't move the car this weekend I may just have to push the car there.

Yeah currently figuring out the differential and all that. Might run a e30 rear subframe but we will see.

Yeah, I plan on running MS in the future but don't have the cash right now. Had boughten the war chip so decide to just keep it instead of trying to sell and losing my ass.

I remember Rob from 2002 Haus in San Luis Obispo was working with e30 sub frame conversions for the bigger diff. Looks fun! Do m20's in 02's make them pretty nose heavy?

From what I have heard from the FAQ is that at the max it can add 100 pounds. This weight can be trimmed down though, the added weight overall doesn't change the driveability, now if you put an M30 in, yes it does make it nose heavy. I plan on this only adding around 80 pounds to my car.

Hi Dylan looks good so far.

For those who ask, the M20 swap (sans AC) doesn't weigh any more than the M10 running AC and smog equipment.

                      that's surprising to hear.

op, neat project! I think my plans may have rotated to an m20 dogleg swap into my 2002, so this thread will be interesting.

anyone know if hartge long-tubes will clear the steering setup on a 2002?

Can't wait to see this car and get turning wrenches on it. It'll be incredible once it's running.

very nice project. I noticed you have an early m20 with the stamped metal cam gear and oil pump drive gear. I suggest you upgrade to the sinter gears. There is history of people whose gears failed. Especially with a turbo you don't want that to go.

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.
