PROJECT KLAUS: 85 ETA 2.7i Build!

Hey guys, my name is Liam! Long time reader, first time caller. I own a couple of ETAs currently.

When a drunk driver totaled my 1JZ swapped MA71 last summer I needed a daily, so I went looked at a 1985 325e that was $700 on CL. Turns out it was a one owner car that the guy wanted out of his driveway, it looked like this when purchased. Thought it was too good to be true but he was just a washed up jazz guy selling his now in a nursing home step mom's car haha.

Here's the A70. It made 300whp 290TQ at 5000ft on 15psi, stock CT12As. Fun car for drifting, I actually daily drove it about 100 miles during the week like this too. Interesting stuff haha. The E36 is my roommate's old 328i, it was an M3 clone down to the subframes and S50 cams, had an M50 intake mani etc etc. Would sit with a bolt-on S5x car though.

The car came with an entire binder of any work done to it and the original window sticker. The car has the LSD, leather seats, and sadly, automatic transmission option.

Car had 250,000 miles when I bought it, it now sits at about 281,000. Up until recently all I have done was change fluids and a different alternator.

I tucked and painted the diving boards a few months back, while the car was still on steelies.

A local guy was selling some square 16x9 ET20 531's (go head wheel whores have a laugh), so I snagged those. However, the blown stock suspension and stretched 195/40s it wasn't a good combo, plus I'm not much one for stretch, so I put 225/45s on all four corners.

    With the 195's

It was my intention to leave the car like this and not dive into the E30 world. I have a CBR600rr that I ride often and get my adrenaline from, but when a friend offered to sell me his ETA for $500 with a ton of new suspension stuff, good motor, G260, and other parts, I had to say yes. Hence the purchase of my '87.

The car came with Bilsteins and H&R Sports, new control arms, and E46 lollipops. Swapped knuckles, control arms, struts, tie rods onto the old car, and it looks like this which is how it sits today.

The plan was never to build this car. I knew it was a great chassis, even in stock guise it has so much more potential then the wet-noodle A70 platform. Putting the suspension on it, and actually getting to work on the car have made me do a complete 180.

So with that being said, the plan is to utilize the G260 and 2.7 ETA block from the parts car, in addition to it's 2.5 harness, and mate an 885 with upgraded springs and rockers to said block with ARP studs for boost. I'm probably going to run a more economic turbo setup as I'm only looking to make 350whp MAX (300whp is where I'm mostly likely going to be), at around 1bar. I have looked into the currently CXracing manifold and some other stuff, such as the REVSHIFT and OBX manifold. I realize these are primarily eBay bits, but we will see. More on this as I get the motor together.

I pulled the 2.7 last weekend from the parts car and stripped the shortblock down to the rotating assembly and oil pan. Next paycheck I will get a proper stand so I can clean and paint the block. I pulled the G260 off as well; I forgot how much easier these pressure plates are to do as opposed to the R154 where you torque in sequence through the inspection ports. Not fun.

I'll post more pictures in the next few days as I make more progress on the motor. My neighbor has an 885 head I would like to pick up in the next week, I need to swap door cars among a few other small things.

    -Liam

This is a good start. What happened with the 1JZ? That would be a fun swap into the E30

Looks like a great start to a build, looking forward to what comes of it! Sorry to hear about the A70... seemed like a very fun piece of machinery

I swapped it into another shell i built (below) but the body harness was beyond done due to the previous owner, and no matter what I did I couldn't get it to go. It was my third JZ A70, and fourth A70, I was kinda over it. I parted the car out in April so I could take summer classes and feel less guilty about buying the CBR. I thought about doing a 1JZ swap, but honestly it's kinda over played now. Never thought I would say that. I'm turboing the M20 and doing the hybrid build primarily to learn some new things and venture into new water. I've never 'built' a motor or turbocharged something that wasn't otherwise turbo.

The A70 was a lot of fun to slide, especially when I shortened my steering knuckles :D

Decided to put the old drift cars steering wheel on the E30, even kept the BMW center bit so it doesn't look too boy racer.

Here's the block as it sits now, does anyone have any information on removing the oil pump(?) gear? It's in the second picture. I'd like to completely strip the block down so I can clean the timing area as mine is so dirty it gives me anxiety haha. I also briefly cleaned up the G260, not looking forward to that shifter install as it looks like it's going to involve a ton of snap-rings. Oh Joy.

For kicks I tried seeing if there was any way my A70 intercooler would fit, which as the picture below shows, is laughable. I need to see what people who have kept the mechanical fan have done intercooler wise. I would obviously like to keep charging piping to a minimum, however it gets VERY hot here (Northern Colorado) during the summer so cooling is an absolute must.

          IMG_1668

I noticed there's a guy on here who makes 4x100 to 5x114.3 adapters for our cars...I happen to have a very nice set of three-piece Starform D2s from the old A70 that I happen to think would look pretty cool on an E30, particularly a four-door....

          IMG_1674

That's really it until I sell some more parts for money to spend on this build. I'm picking up an 885 head on the 20th for $250 that needs a new rocker arm (probably will replace all of them if its not too tedious of a task). That makes me want to do valve seals and springs while I'm in there, but we will see about all of that, as I haven't done any head work.

Hopefully will be clay-barring the car this weekend, I'll post pictures when I'm finished with that.

the intermediate shaft timing gear is held on by a single M10 bolt. the shaft itself is held in the block by a locking plate that also functions as a thrust bearing that is held on by two countersunk screws behind the lower timing cover.

to remove the timing cover you need to remove the big crank bolt (22mm socket) which is not always straight forward its torqued up pretty good. a big breaker bar and block of hardwood wedged in crankcase between the crank and internal face of the block is a good restraint.
