I also find it eases installation to heat the rubber center of the bushing with a heat gun from both sides before lubricating it and then you should be able to slide it by hand over the control arm
I have installed enough lower control arm bushings on these cars to have the static position memorized. My best advice is to loosen the one that's on the vehicle and let it dangle. While it's at rest not touching the body of the car observe the angle of the control arm bushing bracket versus the portion of the control arm that goes between the sub frame and the strut. Duplicate this clocking with the new bushing and bracket and you're good to go.

Where would one go about finding replacement O-rings? I did a quick google search and didn't come up with very much. Judging by the pics it doesn't seem like too bad of a job, and I wouldn't mind knocking it out while the rest of my brake system is already apart. Thanks in advance, I always love seeing a new progress post on your threads.
The side plugs which allow the regulating valves with mesh screens to be removed are a 10mm steel hex.
Regarding the orings I'm not sure what material there are but they are still in fantastic shape, soft and supple. I see no reason to replace them as I'm unlikely to find them in a quality material that will deal with brake fluid submersion, not the mention the piston seals have ribbed wipers on them and are without a doubt purpose made.

This evening I took the dead M20 starter I got from my friend Thad to task for a tear down and cleaning. I completely forgot to get any before pictures but it was out laying in his yard for awhile and was full of rusty mud when I got it. Use your imagination. Rebuilding M20 starter as I intend to use a M20 single mass flywheel behind the M42 so its a little more rev happy.
Everything cleaned, vapor honed what could be, painted the housing and laid out for reassembly.
Aluminum front drive housing, planetary gear drive.
Closeup of the planetary set with fresh lube.
Closeup of the drive pinion, overrun clutch in the drive housing.
Finished starter assembled and tested 100% functioning. I do have a spare motor housing (the large black cylinder) that I will swap on later this week when I get it cleaned because this one has some old rust pocking that had been concealed with especially thick paint when it was last rebuilt.

Why are there two different date code stamps in the alt rear case posted above?
Originally posted by Cha Ching View PostJordan, when you replace items such as worn bushings and bearings on the alternator, are you using OEM BMW parts or sourcing commonly available replacements? Your attention to detail is amazing. I look forward to your posts because of your detailed nature and great pics.
Alternator parts were a mix of dealer/Bosch/NTN
Update from Imperial Collision today, the chassis received its second coat of high build primer.
