Yes, you are correct. I was thinking buna-n was EPDM, but it's NBR. Too many acronyms.

I also find it eases installation to heat the rubber center of the bushing with a heat gun from both sides before lubricating it and then you should be able to slide it by hand over the control arm

I have installed enough lower control arm bushings on these cars to have the static position memorized. My best advice is to loosen the one that's on the vehicle and let it dangle. While it's at rest not touching the body of the car observe the angle of the control arm bushing bracket versus the portion of the control arm that goes between the sub frame and the strut. Duplicate this clocking with the new bushing and bracket and you're good to go.
thank you for the explanation. I also noticed that one of the lollipop bracket dowel guide holes (inner one) is larger that the dowel. Outer dowel is nice and snug. Is it there for some slight camber adjustment?

I did a quick google search and didn't come up with very much. Judging by the pics it doesn't seem like too bad of a job, and I wouldn't mind knocking it out while the rest of my brake system is already apart. Thanks in advance, I always love seeing a new progress post on your threads.
BOSCH doesn't want people going into these, and I can't say I really recommend anyone tries to either. The anti-tamper cap on top is one measure, the two T-100 (I don't know) caps in front, and the 32mm lower caps are aluminum and extreheheheheeeemly tight to the housing. Neither of the aluminum caps have anything to service behind them. Leave them be.

The side plugs which allow the regulating valves with mesh screens to be removed are a 10mm steel hex.

Regarding the orings I'm not sure what material there are but they are still in fantastic shape, soft and supple. I see no reason to replace them as I'm unlikely to find them in a quality material that will deal with brake fluid submersion, not the mention the piston seals have ribbed wipers on them and are without a doubt purpose made.

I've not seen or noticed different size dowels before, every car I've worked on they are both the same size. Maybe someone has modified your car?

This evening I took the dead M20 starter I got from my friend Thad to task for a tear down and cleaning. I completely forgot to get any before pictures but it was out laying in his yard for awhile and was full of rusty mud when I got it. Use your imagination. Rebuilding M20 starter as I intend to use a M20 single mass flywheel behind the M42 so its a little more rev happy.

Everything cleaned, vapor honed what could be, painted the housing and laid out for reassembly.

Aluminum front drive housing, planetary gear drive.

Closeup of the planetary set with fresh lube.

Closeup of the drive pinion, overrun clutch in the drive housing.

Finished starter assembled and tested 100% functioning. I do have a spare motor housing (the large black cylinder) that I will swap on later this week when I get it cleaned because this one has some old rust pocking that had been concealed with especially thick paint when it was last rebuilt.

Dowels are the same size, lollipop dowel holes/cavities aren't (not the actual thru bolt holes). Outer side cavity (furthest from the bushing) is larger than the other one. It's also very so slightly noticeable even on this picture if you judge by shoulder of the tapered area in the cavity. I will put the caliper on it to get the exact difference when I get home

This evening a little work on the alternator, still waiting on a collar from Germany, I'm probably the first guy in ages to order one...

New tolerance ring pressed into the rear case housing.

New rear bearing, polished slip ring/commutator

Replacing the worn down brushes on the voltage regulator.

This thread is the best thing on this website in the time I've been here

Why are there two different date code stamps in the alt rear case posted above?

it's a Kenny Powers quote on wheels

Jordan, when you replace items such as worn bushings and bearings on the alternator, are you using OEM BMW parts or sourcing commonly available replacements? Your attention to detail is amazing. I look forward to your posts because of your detailed nature and great pics.

Happy to be of service :-) I have no idea actually. Maybe when the mold was first created, and then again for when the part was cast?

I buy an immense amount of dealer only parts from the dealer of course, but anything that I can get from WorldPac/IMC/Online that is the same OEM for a fraction of the cost I'm going to.

Alternator parts were a mix of dealer/Bosch/NTN

Update from Imperial Collision today, the chassis received its second coat of high build primer.
