Weighted metal collar was binding on the protective dust boot, allowing only partial engagement of 3rd. Result? Lots of teeth through the box when it finally gave up.

That sucks 100%. Sorry to hear about that :(

Is that counterweight on the shift lever functional? Can one feel the difference?

Yea, it seemed to make the throw feel stock - but with the reduction. It was a very nice shift while it lasted.

Oh yeah, a few more things: I never spend money on anything but my car. I don't buy CD's, electronic gadgets, toys, and rarely clothes. I spend a maximum of $3 a day on lunch. While the rest of the guys are dropping $8 at Chipotle or Quiznoz, I'm at Taco Bell. As you know, these are small sacrifices :D

I actually worked on the car myself today. Yesterday too! I'm two weeks into my six week wait before surgery; last chemo and radiation was two Tuesdays ago. My strength has come back a good deal and I made some headway on The Pickle...

Out came the rear seat and belt buckles as well as the trim panels. Swapped the broken coupe drivers seat for a less broken (but still not great, Yun!) sedan drivers seat. Cut out most of the carpet. FINALLY got the heater core out and it looks like the heater control valve is the problem. Cut back some dead antique carphone wiring which I will finish tomorrow. Tidied up a number of loose/hanging wires under and behind the dash that I will later diet down to just the running systems. Took a look for the fuel leak but found no new evidence. I will just replace all the soft lines and call it macaroni. Lastly, I took a great deal of care in removing a BMW factory car alarm with glass-break sensor, siren, brain box, and full wiring. I have the remote too if anyone is going for beaucoup OEM accessory points.

Changed oil and filter, replaced little bulbs to light up the center console. Replaced four speaker grills and bolts with new, yay.
