Worry about compression ratio more than what exhaust is going on it!
Good points, thanks for the tips. Might sound silly, but part of the reason I wanted to do the headers on the build was because it would probably be a lot easier to install them on the engine while on the stand, then drop it in. But I guess it's not too hard to install them after the fact.

And aesthetics were about 30% of my decision to purchase an S38 over an S50.

S/M5X motors are boring and just overdone, seriously everybody is installing them, some of us don't only care about power and want something unique.

you could always make a big plastic cover to hide the engine like the M50/S50 motors. ;)

So the purchase has been made? Sweet.

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

OK this PDF is one of the most confusing things I have tried to read lately. It is a mishmash of M10, M20 and M30 info that is all unlabeled and to top it off there is some strange brake caliper stuff crammed into odd places. WTF?

As a person starting his own 2.7i build and shooting for around 9.5:1 compression I kept getting my hopes up thinking "Aha! X amount off the block and Y amount of the head and.....Shit! thats M30 stuff, Maybe this is....Damnit thats M10 with S14 crank stuff...." AARRGGHHH

I reread it a few times and i think that 30 to 40 thousandths off the block and twenty to thirty thousandths off the head will give 9.5 to 10:1 for a SETA short block with "i" head. Is that correct?

yeah, 5 year old stroker info isn't what I'd be looking for either..

yes, because our 20 year old engines changed a lot in the last 5 years

yeah, and I know you have lots of experience building M20s ;)

has the body of knowledge changed in the last 5 years? certainly. most of us 5 years ago were wondering what chips to use, not which combination of cranks, rods, pistons, valves, cams, etc. to use..

Shit... 3 years ago junk yard turbos were the cutting edge of e30 technology.

the knowledge has changed a lot in 5 years with M50 swap... but is anything that fundamentally different?

I never heard anything negative from Ely about his budget build either... i something radically different that makes a cheap build much more different?

I mean, sure if you want to order magical pistons out of a catalog, figure out your ideal setup, and throw in a MAF - maybe you need newer info

PS MAF upgrades are a waste of money get a real EMS with MAP!

no, if you knew anything current you wouldn't be looking for a MAF conversion at all. ;)

seriously heeter - you're way out of your territory here. stick to business, drinking and slutty college chicks. :p
