I'm 17, about to pick up an '87 325e for $1000, and the car needs a starter. Weird.

You just have to know which rotors to buy. Works great.

yea as i am quickly finding out. thats also why i have asked about the e to i swap. we have basicly the whole top end of the engine off so if its possible for a reasonable price i would do it.

getting the starter out can be done from under the car also and some might say its easier, but its a good thing we took off the whole intake manifold

ya the seals were all f-ed in the a

the top half was just metal brushed a bit, but u can see how much crap is built up in there

again u can see how dirty it is

alright this is quickly starting to piss me off. the new starter is on and despite it being a little different from the orginal, we got it set up and ready to go. now a problem, when the key turns it sounds like a high whining. like the gear is spinning in the starter but not hitting the flywheel. anyone with some starter know how wana chime in at this point? would be great.

on a bright side valve cover is off, cleaned, sanded and ready for paint. my friend will be painting it up tomorrow and i have no idea what it will look like, i am hoping for the best. also took a wire brush for the drill and started to polish up the intake manifold. ill have pics up in a few. but damn that thing was dirty! and i still am not but about 1/3 of the way done with that.

also the car needs new vacuum and fuel lines, they are dry rotted to hell and back. hopefully my friend can get me clear vacuum lines, that would be a nice touch.

but at this point i have racked myself to figure out the starter problem. the flywheel looks to be in decent shape from what u can see through the starter hole, but i can't seem to get it. we fiddled with it for about an hour and still nada. so if anyone could chime in it is much needed before i drag the car to the shop to have them charge me a few hundred before they tell me it was something stupid. so any input?

I'd take the starter into an AutoZone or someplace like that and have them test it. It don't cost nothing to have them test it.
