i swear if there are any number of things that can wrong with a fucking starter, i have found them all! took the starter back over to auto zone and we figured out that we didnt have the wires on right and the starter wasnt getting enough power to engage. so i go back and hook it up and now the damn thing wont ground!!! and for the win, now it might have cooked cause there was no ground! fml

got the starter in and it turns over... i think... at least it did the one time before the battery died and we had to put it on the charger for the night. other than that it was a slow day. cleaned up the rust spot a bit and it turns out there is very little rust at all. most of the spot will still have to be cut away because the area around the eaten through part is very thin and its better to just cut it out, and fix it. thats about all that got done today. just waiting on ups to find my damn fuel pumps and get them here. hoping tomorrow, and than it should... should... run

              IT RUNS! :)
and it drove around the block several times.
one of the coolent pipes is leaking and smoking like hell as the coolent burns on the block. one of te belts came flying off and got about an inch from my buddies head, flew across the yard and landed in the neighbors tree lol. so now put that back on and we should be good.
other than that, it is ideling real rough and is dieing when the rev gets to low. i is thinking mass air flow sensor, any thoughts?

this fucking car hates me. first the belts rub, than the brakes leak, than the car eats my hand. ya, i was checking the alt belt and my buddy didnt know, started the car, and my hand when for a ride around the alt. very luckly i still have my fingers, even lucker still, nothing is broken! just cut me up real good, hurts like hell.

Sounds like you are learning alot of stuff the hard way.

If your belts are rubbing you might want to check the alt. bushings.....the alt. twists when the bushings go bad. You should also check the lowest pulley (crankshaft) as you can install the belt on the wrong slot.

No idle condition is usually an intake leak.....since you just removed your complete intake, you will have to check everything.

                  Intake notes:

Intake gaskets are pretty thick and they can be re-used. They can also be installed backwards.

The metal tube underneath the intake manifold has a o-ring..... it must seat properly into the intake manifold.

I beleive the "E" model has the idle valve near the valve cover. Check the hoses that connect to it......any cracking or dry rot can cause an intake leak.

Keep in mind that a small intake leak will cause a crappy idle and the RPMs will bounce between 500 to 1500. A large intake leak will cause the motor to stall the second you remove your foot from the gas.

And don't worry about your hand......Getting it caught in the Alt. pulley is the E30's way of saying "hello"

like you said, the belys were rubbing because the po put them on the wrong pullies, thus causing them to sit misalined and therefore rubbing, but that was figured out as soon as we started taking off the old ones.

the problem with idle is most likely the air flow sensor. my friends car was having this same problem a few weeks ago and that was the problem on his. also the neighbor of the guy who is helping me with the whole thing, is damn good with cars (him and his son both do car work for a living) and he messed around and agreed that the air flow is the problem. so friday is trip to pull-a-part day

also yes there are two hoses that have cracks in them and need to be replaced but should not be causing this big of a screw up with the idel.

Got a new maf today and a bunch of new hoses, but its still sitting high. Its idleing at about 1k rpm and I can't seem to figure out what is making it sit up so high.

now the car is acting just plain stupid. it'll run fine for a few miles than it just drops to 1k rpm and won't move. u can depress the clutch and push the gas in and out and it still says at the 1k mark. i can't seem to figure it out. its not the maf, tried 3 different ones and problem still keeps up. anyone ever have this problem? anyone know what it is? the car is going to the shop on wensday for a brake line rebuild and i'll have them look at it but if anyone knows what it is, even if i cant fix it at least it'll save me an hour of them messing with it, and save me $100.
