It's been a while. New religion thread. You know the drill.

So, most of you will recall past threads on the subject have for the most part stayed on track/topic, I expect this to be no different.

As some of you know I've moved to an area where 70%+ population is LDS, or Mormon as is the common title used by non members. I've been privy to a world of new experiences being a minority in their day to day life.

I'm interested in some of your experiences as well. Ill share mine soon along with some questions and observations.

Now I live in the biggest melting pot on the face of the planet with the exception of NYC

You want us to tell you how whacked out the mormons are, dont you..

When i was in my early teens i spent a couple of weeks of summer vacation with my aunt and cousins in FL. They was LDS. So i got to attend their church. When i was intorduced, they allways said, Hi this is my nephew/cousin Jason, and he isn't a member of the church. So we went to service and them sunday school. Then again i was intoduced the same way infront of everyone. I felt that it wasn't very open armed welcome.

I know we have Mormon members on here, But lets try to keep this thread civil and not flat out attack anyone.

Yes, no attacks. The Scientology threads went quite well last year. I expect the same here!

We have German Baptists here... Sort of cross between amish and mormon. Pretty friendly people, very hard workers and very rich to show for it.

I see this thread beginning to derail already.

I will try to correct it post haste.

Question from a non LDS person #1

"Why does the LDS moral dress code requirement stipulate that men must not have facial hair of specified length, but uses a long haired, bearded Jesus image (Stereotypically used by Catholic groups) as their salvation?

Sub-question in same vein, Why is OK if a woman has pierced ears, but a man does, it is disgracing your "Temple" (body).

And Question #2, How is the Prophet/President chosen?

Answer(s): Religions were all made up by people (most were not very bright). You all knew I was going to say it. I know you don't agree, but I feel like expressing what seems obvious (i.e., the elephant in the room).

Ok, I see you are not well versed in the doctrines of the LDS Church, but thanks for your attempt anyway. I guess you didn't go use the search function to see how a past posted thread based on a religion subject has worked in the past. I can make it easier on ya with a link or two...

i lived in Mesa AZ for 3 years. the MO capital of AZ. i can mirror the feeling you had. i had neighbors that would not talk to me even if we were at the mail box at the same time. they would send, first: people over to try to recruit me, then young cute girls to do the same. they would throw trash in our yard and generally make us feel unwelcome because we were not MO's. my roommate, who owned the house, worked for the city of MESA and experienced discriminatory practices within the city because he was not a MO. he was passed over for many promotions and forced to do the oncall fire mechanic rotation more than anyone else. they were constantly trying to get him to join the cult at work. when that did not succeed the pressure was turned up even more to the point where he quit after working there for 8 years and got a job with the city of Chandler doing the same thing and loosing his seniority, to get away from it.

he still owns the house and lives there with only the mexican family that will talk to him (the MO's don't like him either and one of their daughters jumped his daughter after school).

it took me answering the door naked one EARLY Sunday morning, when they were trying to recruit us, to get them to stop.

not to say that they are all bad, but that has been my experiences living with them in "their" city. i also have MO friends that do not do anything like that to me or anyone else.

I respect people's decisions and their freedom to worship whatever religion to choose, but with that said, I did a research project with a friend in High School (who was Mormon) on Mormonism, and I have to say, it is one of the biggest farces ever. Personally, I cannot understand how people can believe that religion. However, to each their own.

I have a couple friends who are Mormon and are on their mission trips right now. They are told to go some place in the world for 2 years with no internet connection, only 2 phone calls a year, and can only write letters. That wouldn't go over well with me.

I will stay outta this one for now, as I have a hard time buying religions of all flavors.
